Alright----
sorry for the fact that i haven't been able to gleen any new knowledge from you guys for about 3-4 months-truth is I don't model in the summer much. But, I also have a job(yes a real job, a burger flipper) anyways, my psychology teacher(also social studies) is a member of the 'Red Bull' Infantry division(I think it is the 34th) which is Minnesota Nat'l Guard. He was deployed last year as a airbase guard in britain, however, his real job is a FDC? for an artillery battery within that division. I was wondering, if anyone has a model for an M109, which is what they are equipped with, and what kind of vehicle they stick an FDC in.

thank you much!

The current M109 variant in use by the Regular Army is the M109A6 Paladin produced by both Italeri and a rebox by Revell. It is a good kit, but the tracks are so-so. Fortunately Skybow (now AFV Club) make a set of single link tracks to replace them.

The MNARNG may use an earlier version of the M109, possibly the M109A5. Italeri makes (made?) a version of the M109 that builds into all versions between the M109 through M109A4. It is kit #246 and called M109E4/G/A1-A2/E4.

The physical difference between an M109A4 and M109A5 are minor (A5 has a longer tube) and would be difficult to point out.

As far as an FDC, they ride around in an M577A2 command track carrier. Tamiya makes an older variant of this (M577) and it could be kit bashed with an Academy M113A2 to update it to a more recent version.

i would get some pics of the 577 in question because every unit has different upgrades. when my old unit got paladins, they kept the old m577's that i used for fdc.

Our new ulm battery--ha ha, we actually had a militia unit of artillery that was deactivated(formed due to we had a real war in the new ulm area, two battles fought in 1862, not confederates, but souix, and a misunderstanding/pride of both sides) but now we have that artillery section of four M109's-I will ask what kind they are. They also have an engineer vehicle-don't know why-but it is the one(don't know the name either) with tank body, yet the turret is a crane inside an armored box......a couple of those funny little tracked ammo carriers/trailers new humvees-they used to have about 15 chevy trucks painted in cammo, and a slew of big multipurpose trucks and a couple of regular ones...sorry for not knowing any designations-my expertise is in ww2

The engineer vehicle you are describing sounds like an M578 recovery vehicle. It is called a VTR (Vee-ter) for vehicle, tracked, recovery and sometimes called a cherry picker.

Not an engineer vehicle, but basically a tow truck for light tracked vehicles. Is this it?

Welcome back beav, and welcome to the working world Smile [:)]
I'm sure your questions are answered, but to add my two cents, the only m109 I know is manufactured by Italeri and reboxed by Revell.
I built the m-110 recently. Didn't paint it yet, just sitting there, waiting. It's a good kit, no major problems, and an amazing piece of machinery.
