I hear you Rebel. I always found the civil war ironclad battles to be endlessly fascinating. What has always amazed me was the ability of the Southerners to cobble together surprisingly effective ships out of whatever junk they could scrounge. On the otherside of the coin, you have Ericsson's radical technology which kind of started warships on the road to the 20th century battleships.

I just finished building Emhar's Whippet, and let me say, I cant wait to get me another one!

Ya, the Virginia was slow, it took a 1/2 hour to turn around, while all the Moniter had to do is move her turret. THe only reason the battle ended was because the Virginia hit the pilot box on (where the driver looks out, it was a little box on top of the ship) it blinded the commander so the Moniter fell back to regain some order. When she did this the Virginia thought that they were retreating, so thinking they were the winners, sailed back for port. The Moniter, after regaining order, turned around to see the virginia, sailing away. So they sailed back for there port, thinking they were the victors.
whoops, My Civil War interests are getting to me, I could talk all day on it.

The Merrimack or Viginia could only steam about 4-5 knots. Pretty darn slow, made a juicy target for sure.

I envision them "charging", checking their watch every few minutes and the loader asking "Are we there yet?" every 30 feet. Infantry would say "Oh, crap- here comes a tank. Let's go get some lunch and take a nap before they get here"

Just imagine a Tiger or King Tiger plowing along a WW I battlefield picking off tanks left and right. Nothing could stop it, much like the infamous encounter with the KV tank in WW II.

3 mph?? Nice to know you could out-walk a tank if necessary.

I'm surprised no one has said anything witty yet about the Germans going for the two "females" first... Big Smile [:D]

It's amazing when you think about the millions who perished in WWI that the first tank battle had no casualties. Semper Fi, mike

Just for some of you who did,nt know about it, or want to know about it, here it is. Last night I was watching a show called Clash of Warriors on the history channel. THe episode was on WWI. SO I was watching and near the end they did a little info on the first Tank Vs Tank Battle. Heres what happend.
3 british tanks MK. IV's 2 females and one male spotted a german A-7 Sturmpazer on the horizon. They started for it, the German tank charging for them. THey were Going 3mph![:0] The Brits were able to take the first shot but missed. Then, the Strumpanzer fired and one of the Females and hit it, then it hit the other female, they both retreated leaving the male alone. The male fired again, but missed, the strum panzer fired, but missed. Then finally, the Mk 4 was able to hit the sturmpanzer. No one was killed, and no tank was knocked out. Its amazing to see how Tank Warefare and Technology had changed From WWI to WWII. And then to present day![:0]
