Opinions on DML T72 G/M
Posted by zokissima on Thursday, November 25, 2004 2:40 PM
Hi
Don't know how many, if any, of you out there built or know anything about this kit. I'm interested in general quality, issues, anything about the kit really. I'm in the process of getting one online with some AM stuff for it, and I was wondering how the kit was in general.
Thanks!

I've got all the T-72 variants by DML. The kit is generally panned by the experts, but when assembled, it looks like a T-72 to me. This kit is actually a T-72M, the "G" designation is a ficticious identifier for an East German T-72.

Just my opinion, but for the cost of AM tracks, you could buy the superior Tamiya T-72.

Here are some of the AM that was made for this kit:
Airwaves #35009 T-72M1 PE set
Eduard #35001 T-72M PE set
Commanders #5-002 T-72 PE Gill Armor set
Eduard #35329 T-72M2 w/ERA PE set
Armo #35735 T-72 aluminum barrel
Eduard #34002 T-72M aluminum barrel
Kirin #28521 T-90 resin conversion (updated T-72)
Modelkasten K-12 T-62/T-72/T-55M tracks

Probably some more items I've missed.

I also have built several of the DML T-72/T-80 releases and while I do like them, the one problem I have with the kits is track clearance. When you put the top track section on, the upper hull won't fit to the lower hull. If you leave the upper track section off, the area will be covered by the hull skirts. Some rivet counters don't like these kits, but as the Major said above, it looks like a T-72 to me.

Hello!
The DML T-72 , does indeed , look good , with some extra detailing . The previous replies, should help you with this project.I would not call this kit, "a waste of money ". I added some details to mine , ( no PE , just bits ot plastic, nuts, bolts , brackets for bins , etc. )and I am happy with the results.

Further to my last , along time ago ESCI , put out a 1/35 T-72, the kit was " horrible" . No doubt the Tamiya T-72 , is the best , but for the price , the DML T-72 , works for me.

Just curious, but besides you, who else referred to this kit as "a waste of money"? Certainly not myself nor Erik. I agree that a nice model can be built out of this kit without the use of aftermarket accessories. It was my first DML kit I built way back around 1990 time frame.

Hey, if you bring up the old Esci T-72, don't forget its ugly brother, the ficticious T-74. Got both of those as well. Not a bad try for a tank model made when the Berlin Wall was still up and the Cold War was in full swing.

Hello
Sorry about the term " waste of money" , Rob,modellers outside of this forum, had used this term , hence the quotation marks. I was not by any means referring to opinions in here. Your opinion , ideas , and advice and those of others in here shed light , on the many aspects , of armor modelling. All I can say is Happy Modelling.

Thanks for the replies guys. I initially built the Trumpeter T-72, but that was one of my earliest builds, and I wanted to rebuild a nicer (READ: mose skilled build Smile [:)] ), and this one came up.
For 20 bucks, I got the kit, the two eduard PE sets, and a resin barell. Not sure about what kind or from whom, as I"m still waiting for the kit to come in the mail.
I also got a spare set of Tamiya t-72 tracks, the rubberband type. Which look superior, the Tamiya or the included indy link tracks?
Thanks again!
