Opel Blitz w/flakvierling 38...
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 28, 2004 2:13 AM
I've posted here and there and lurked for a year or so now, I guess I ought to introduce myself; My name is Matt and I've been building off and on pretty much all my life. My modelling skills are so/so at best, but I try. I have more unfinished models than finished ones. To illustrate the point, my fist "show and tell", for lack of a better term, has taken me the better part of 6 or 7 years to complete. Tonight, I slayed that dragon Smile [:)]

So, if you guys would'nt mind, give me some feedback, good or bad, about my intro piece.

It is an Italeri Opel Blitz, towing a Tamiya Flakvierling 38. The junk in the trunk is a mix of stuff from various sources. I tried to depict an Afrika Corps vehicle. The weathering didnt come through the photos too well (I'm really no photographer). I also realize I need some better lighting. All in all, I personally am satisfied with the result, even if it took me YEARS to finish. Fire away gents! Thanks in advance!

Very nice clean build. I see the wash somewhat but you are right, it doesnt really show too much in the pictures. I am curious. How did you like the FLAK 38? I just picked one up the other day but I haven't opened it up yet. A buddy of mine said they were a bear to get togather.

Looking forward to more photos of your work!

Matt,

Outstanding build! Trust me when I say that I know what this kit takes to build and you've done an excellent job with it. You've done a good, subtle weathering job and the overall appearance is very convincing. The only observation I have - and its very small indeed - would be the canvas looking a little "thick"...almost like there's more material than necessary, but it doesn't really detract from the model at all. I love the little barrel covers on the Flak and the way the markings all look properly painted on.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work...well done!

Welcome and thanks for sharing your debut with us!

You've done very well with both items, I particularly like the way you handled the identification flag and the details on the Flakvierling. The dusty outlines in the windshield also offer a nice touch.

Only suggestions I have for you in the realm of taking the pics. Get a blue background (an old T-shirt, a piece of posterboard) and a couple of gooseneck desk lamps for lighting and you'll be amazed at what this does for your picture quality, especially with a digital camera.

Wow, that dragon is DEAD! Great job, looks really nice. Have to agree with Foster on the canvas though - only drawback on the build but still better than I could probably do.

Welcome Matt to the forums and thanks for sharing those photos of your build. Doesn't it feel good to get it on the shelf. Can't add much to the previous comments other than hope to see more work soon.

A humble thanks for your kind words so far, and fr the honest critiques. I agree that the canvas might be a bit big, although when im loking at it up close, it doesnt seem so big. I guess the camera adds a few pounds. =)

The Flak 38 went together fine, and seems to have enough detail, at least for my taste.

I wonder how many years it will take me to finish the next one!

I'm actually contemplating in buying this kit. I was looking at it the other day. I'm not too impressed about the picture in the box, but how was your experience in building it?

Very nice build. 6-7 years is a long time to have a work in progress, but it looks like the result was worth the wait. The overall build looks to be done to a very high standard.
Thanks for sharing!

Again, thanks for the kind words! I guess it went over better than I thought it would, honestly.

As far as the Opel kit goes, it went to gether easily. If I were to do it again, and I might, I would be sure that I WASHED it down really good before I painted. It must have had alot of release agents on it cause the paint had problems adhering to the plastic. Other than that, a couple of the really small, thin parts were a pain to work with. I might build up a radio truck if I ever get the gumption, and will make note of these issues.

I'll defintely post up some more of my work, if I ever get it done, but you guys might be waiting a loooong time! I've got a 48th Tiger II in the works and an e100 that I'd like to build up as a Jaeger.

A labor of love, I might say. And it came out very well. Great job.
