JCon; The type 86 or KdF car was never produced, the website you posted uses the name KdF car, but does not clarify that the KdF car which was not built is the type 86 civilian vehicle, not the type 87 military vehicle, of which 564 were built and look very similar. Variants of the type 87 include the type 187 and type 287. Schiffer's VW at War, volume II, page 26 and 46 give a breif overview of this vehicle and it's use.

Rob; the first site you posted calls this a type 98, Schiffer lists a type 98 under Schwimmwagen A, type 128 variants. I can't find any other reference to a type 98 as being produced. How this is different from a type 87...?

I notice there is a box art which implies the Luftwaffe used type 87's;

I believe you will find your answer at the following site... there were only prototypes during the war and never put into production as they went with the Kübelwagen and the Schwimmwagen for better ground clearance and mobility for the war effort. I found it interesting though that the name Volkswagen came from Hitler!

This should keep you busy. I'm a bit of a bug fan, especially WW2 VWs.

The type 87 VW, 564 were built, almost all were delivered to the DAK. Following the surrender of the DAK in May 1943, the remaining type 87's were used in the ETO. Four wheel drive, like the Schwimmwagen. Also called the Kommanderwagen, although other vehicles also shared this name.

Hiya Matt,

Nope, that's the Kubelwagen. (Although I think that the Beetles used by the military had a Kubelwagen chassis...?)

This is what I'm looking for:

Thanks for looking around though!

well this one looks ok, although it seems to be 'reconfigured' according to the text... is this sort of what you wanted?

Does anyone know of an online walkaround or any other good reference on the Volkswagen Beetles used by the Wehrmacht & SS during WWII? I've come up with very little so far and it's mostly useless.

I'm currently building thje CMK 35th DAK vehicle and also have a solid roof kit which I'd like to build as a Luftwaffe vehicle, but I dunno if the Luftwaffe used them or not. Any help would be appreciated...
