Big Tank Pictures
Posted by okieboy on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 12:49 AM
Hello All,

I recently participated in the R/C tank battles at the AAF Tank Museum in Danville, VA and I wanted to share some pictures with you. Of course there are too many to post here so I thought I'd give you the links and let you go from there, but here's a teaser anyway!

That's my finished Stug IV.

Check out the "events" section at www.MAADHQ.com for starters and click on the November 20th Regional Battle. There are over 50 pics to view.

The actual AAF Tank Museum website is: www.aaftankmuseum.com. Just scroll down for the next battle in March and click on the arrows for pics.

For those of us that not only love to build but drive the Full Option R/C tanks, the museum at Danville sports the largest reported indoor "battlefield" complete with three bridges over running water, a small town, a village, mountains, trees, railroad trestle, and a tunnel. Hope you like the pics.
As you can tell, the Stug is finished and is full option R/C. I'm currently working on Tamiya's Full Option Sherman and I'm converting it to an Easy Eight.

I'm glad you had a good time. I have to get to one of thos in the future. First I have to finish my Tiger I and M4.
Who makes the StuG?
Looks great by the way, does it have recoil?

Hey ya'll

Brian, I think that's the first time I've seen your Soviet BMP. You did an awesome job on it. I see that you did it justice. So have you gotten around to beginning your Tiger I yet? I'm curious to see what you do with it.
Ausf, the Stug is made by Bandai. I bought it at www.dave4what.com and yes, I fitted a Tamiya recoil unit in there. There isn't much room inside there and I had to get creative.
A friend of mine in our R/C tank club machined many of the parts necessary to convert this kit to full option R/C:

Gearbox adaptor plates
Sprocket adaptors
Spring loaded idler system
Trunnion for main gun.
Suspension limit stops to keep the roadwheel trucks from rotating 180 degrees and contacting with the return rollers.
Metal barrel

I also bought the following:

Metal tracks
Metal roadwheels
A resin kit that included a trunnion, mantlet, metal hinges for hatches, and lift hooks.
Tamiya electronics: DMD, MF-01, Tamiya Hop Up kit.
Motors
Tamiya gearboxes

This kit needed a lot of help in the way of accurization and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they were on a mission and just had to have a large scale Sturmgechutz. However, once I was done, I was really satisfied with it and how it ran. It also isn't a tank that you'll see many other people operating and is more unique than just another Tiger or Sherman. Bandai also offers a Panzer MK IV, but I've heard that this is even more trouble to upgrade than the Stug and is reportedly out of scale in many places.
