m1a1 project
Posted by diggeraone on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 7:17 PM
I have posted pics of a m1a1 that I am currently doing. These pics were of a non-slip surface that I did using corn meal mixed into the paint. This did not work out the way I wanted it to.But I have yet begun the fight and have found that using a thin layer of elmers glue and sprinkle my corn meal on it will give me the effect that I am looking for.So when I have this finished with the corn meal I will post some new pics to show the differance.Digger

Looking forward to the pics. I didn't think the last ones turned out so bad...but then again I see lots of M1A1s with some sloppy non-slip on them. I have a tank battalion right across the street if you want some pics of them just let me know and I will get them up here

Next time you could try using Mr Surfacer sprayed on a masked off area and then painted. I have used the Mr. Surfacer 500 before and it gives a very nice texture

You can try a Tamiya kit or go with one the a M1A1 article said to do.There opinion was the Revell of Germany kit is the best out there so far. This article I can't remember but found on a web search. Also the Revell kit is cheaper then the Tamiya.Digger

Instead of using corn meal you might try flour. I did a desert diarama and wanted scale sand. Flour poured on the glue was perfect. When the glue was almost dry I dumped the excess flour off then lightly brushed off any loose flour , then painted. Maybe some of the artists spray glue followed by the flour.

Decide for yourself. Here is a side-by-side look at most of the kits out there.

Digger, for my Leclerc, I used bits of masking tape to represent the anti-skid surfaces. Granted, it was a 1/72 model... But it might be worth trying at larger scales... Easy to cut, easy to put in place. I 'sealed' it with liquid glue, applied on all edges of the tape...

Interesting idea. Make sure to post some pics when done, as I'd love to see how the technique worked out for you.

Digger, I'm still worried about the longevity of corn meal! As I mentioned in the other thread, I'm afraid it would either rot or attract boll weevils!
Or both!

OK! I can't resist being cute. "Digger". The Martha Stewart school of modelling recommends that this method of cornmeal application is not suitable for human consumption. It sounds like an orignal approach, be sure and show us pics of the results. Please don't take this the wrong way. Semper Fi, mike
