Help with tamiya paints

I too am in a similar state. For standard overall gray, I tend to not use Tamiya, but model master acrylics, but Tamiya does offer their own colour, I just can't remember which.
As for the three tone camo, I use Tamiya dark yellow, earth brown, and NATO green.
I'm sure someone else will be able to give you (and me) a more detailed answer.

With the 3 tone camo, the Tamiya paints I use are Dark yellow, Dark Green, and Red Brown. The german (I assume that who you are talking about) Had different schemes on their veicles, mainly based upon what they could get. All new vehicles were painted a base coat of Dark yellow in (i think) February 1943. Some vehicles would have line camo while others might have blotchy camo. They could have Dark green and dark yellow, or red brown and Dark yellow, or both. I believe they also painted som of their German Gray vehicles with Olive Drab.

Late in the war the King Tiger and Panthers were painted with a base of first Dark Green, then later Red brown Primer. The Tamiya Hull Red is a close match for the primer red. Then the Dunkelgelb and other colors would be added for the cammo.

Tigerman said it- I use Hull red as the primer color. I also add a little hull red to the Red-Brown because to me the red-brown is too brown.

If you are building Tamiya tank's, they list the paint colors on the instructions(both spray and bottle). this can be used as a basis for non-Tamiya kits.

Thanks for all the info, it confirms what I thought to be the case.

My main area of confusion was in the colours used in North Africa. I have 2 kits awaiting painting, a Hasegawa Panzer IV and a Revell Tiger I, both 1/72 scale. From the above comments I intend to spray the PzIV in XF-59 desert yellow and the Tiger 1 in XF-60 dark yellow, as this will be one based in Tunisia 1943.
