M3a1 Halftrack... DONE!!!
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, December 3, 2004 9:59 AM
I've recently converted Tamiya's OLD M3a2 halftrack to a very early M3a1. I replaced the wheels, drive sprocket and idler sprocket with resin parts. The walls of the crew compartment with the ladders were removed and scratch built. Almost all of the canvas stowage and straps were scratchbuilt.

What do you think? Be honest please, I'm always looking to improve my skills.

Thanks,
Jesse

Looking very good. tough I would consider a dusting cover over the wheels as in the feild they are never straigth black they uselly have a grayish color due to wear and dust.

one thing I noticed after a quick glance at my References..

The M3 had the .50 cal pintle mount.. which was found unsatisfatory and was changed to the M49 ring Mount in the M3A1.. in addition a large number of M3's were upgraded to M3A1's because of this.

Also the Storage racks on the Back of the Tamiya kit were developed for the M3A2 which never saw production because by the time it was ready for production there was no need for them.

when I built this Kit I did it straigt out of the box.. it was my first military vehicle and someday I will do it again just because I liked it so much...

Ah, a kit that so many people seem to wish for. I say you've done a good job. I know little about them, so near as i can tell, it looks very nice. I do agree about the rubber being a bit too dark. Still, that is a small nitpick.

Good job! really good detailing and a good paint job. it looks good but i'd add some dirt to the wheels and tracks enless you don't want it to look dirty and grity. either way it is still an amazing model.

Nice work, I have one in my pile to get to someday, and I'm hoping to get a few of the aftermarket kits to make a few tank destroyers from this basic model as well. Good work on yours.

Very nice work! Only curiosity I have is in regards to the large red thing draped across the hood?

Scorn is right. It is an air identification panel. Unfortunately, I made it too red. It should be more orange.

Thanks all for the comments. You are the first (besides my wife) to see and comment on any of my models.

Thanks again,
Jesse

That's what I figured, but wanted to be sure...especially since it's covering the large white star on the hood. Thanks for the clarification.
