Kelly's Heroes Armour
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 5, 2004 11:24 AM
OK, OK, I know I'm not normally one to post in here, please go easy on me as this is my first forray into armour, since I was about 8 (Matchbox kits way back in 1977 that used to last about a week due to rough handling!).

Anyway, I had a crazy notion yesterday whilst watching 'Kelly's Heroes' on TV.

I'm thinking of doing a diorama of the whole Tiger/Pink paint scene and was looking for some advice on the Armour front.

In my enthusiasm (and with no preparatory thought), I rushed out today and bought the Dragon Late Production Tiger I (With Zimmerit) and also an Italeri cast hull M4 Sherman (Both in 1/72).

First question is, are these models appropriate to the movie, since I'm having trouble finding decent stills on the web?

I recalled that the Tigers in the film looked like Tiger Is to me and they had Zimmerit, so that's why I chose the Dragon kit (Not very scientific I know) .

The paint job on the Tigers looked a little 'non-standard' to my eyes, but can anyone out there vouch for it's authenticity or recommend a good book?

As for the Sherman, I was a little unsure as to which model appeared in the film anyway. Does anyone know what model Oddballs Sherman was based on and can you recommend a good 1/72 kit as a starting point?

Cheers in advance,

Rob M.

Ah.......it's Hollywood.....you can do whatever you want. It's not like we can say; "oh, well, this is tank 007 from the 1st SS Panzer Regiment, seen after it was shot in the butt with a pink paint round........Tongue [:P]

Keep in mind that the Tiger in Kelly's Heros was a T-34 mocked up to look like a Tiger. A Tiger is a much larger vehicle, but I'd go a head and use the Tiger kit anyway, after all it's just Hollywood.

Actually the Tiger mockup was an early Tiger I with rubber tires and the old cupola. It was also incorrectly painted Panzergrey. At that time of the war it should have been tri-colored cammo.

I applaud you! Frequently, way to frequently, we get to hung up on authentic and the drama. Like the Bill Maulden topic, humor is also a big part of dioramas. I think Kellys Hero's is a great subject full of humor.

In KH, the "intent" was a Sherman and a Tiger I.
Go for it.
