my first project in 3 years, any suggestions?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 5, 2004 3:58 PM
Hi, I am thinking of coming back to the hobby seriously after about 3 years. I want to do a diorama of a scene from Band of Brothers (after reading some of the posts, Im sure some of you have seen it Cool [8D] ) In the segment Day of Days, when the Paratroopers hit the artillery post fireing on Utah beach. my question is where can I find ammo crates and discarded shells that would go with the 105s or prefferably, does anyone have an idea on how to scratch build shell casings? I was thinking of getting a thick peice of copper or brass wire, cutting it up into little peices and drilling out one end of each peice. if nothing else can someone tell me what size wire to get, I havent a clue. Thanks in advance

My suggestion is to do a search at modelmecca.com or missionmodels.com for brass shells. Several companies make them, I just can't recall the names (Hussar is one company that does come to mind). As for empy ammo crates, look for the accessory kits by Academy and Tamiya. You should be able to find a lot of diorama parts in those sets.

You can make shell casing much easier by using plasic tubing by Evergreen or some other manufacturer. Cut to about 3/4 inch length, drill out the interior of the open end to thin the walls down, cap the other end with a circular piece of thin plastic, make it slightly larger than the tube. Lastly, paint the exterior brass and the inside black for sutt. Pretty simple and they come out looking good. Much easier than working with brass too.

You can also make ammo crates out of basswood, this can be found at your LHS. Would also like to welcome you to the forums.Sign - Welcome [#welcome]Big Smile [:D]

You could also use very small copper tubing for the casings. It depends on the scale of the dio though.
