Xmas Village Sherman.
Posted by Panzerman on Monday, December 6, 2004 8:04 AM
Who makes the best 1/72 Sherman Tank?
It has become a holiday tradition to have an "occupied" Xmas village.
I usually build 1/35 stuff . I have seen Italeri, Hasagwa and Revell.
Which one is a good kit?
Thanks

I recently built the Hasegawa kit. It went together well. Personally, I would stay away from Italeri 1/72 kits. They have indy tracks that are a pain.

Personally, I like the Italeri kit. The indie tracks help make it good, despite being difficult to install, and the exposed engine makes for interesting possibilities. Maybe the townsfolk are helpiing a crew with their broken down Sherman on the way to the front, or to winter exercises. Revell/Germany just released an M4A1 recently in 1/72 scale as well that should be excellent, considering the quality of the kits they've been putting out.

Hope this helps.

Revell Germany just released one? Hmm, wasn't aware of that. They have an older one that is not of the same standard as their newer kits. Eduard just released a sherman model kit in 1/72. Yes its a kit and not a conversion. Might be worth checking out. Other than that I'd go with the Italeri.

Hasagawa kit is about 1/70. Revell kit is the old Matchbox at 1/76, Italeri is the best kit from the box in 72nd. There are conversion kits for this one from MR which allow you to make pretty much any version but they get expensive. For the occupation of your Xmas village, any of the above kits will work and detail is about the same with the Italeri kit probably a little better.

The Italeri M4A1 is decent if you don't mind an inaccurate fit. The kit has a late model hull with a 75mm gun, but late model M4A1's came only with the 76mm gun.

I like the italeri kit, Ive heard (as posted above) that there are inaccuracies, but not enough to make me care. The kit comes with link and length tracks and vynl tracks, so you have a choice. It also comes with an engine, 2 spare road wheels, a tarp, and (if you use the rubber tracks) spare tracks all to add to the vehicle.
