Schurzen for a Panzer III ausf. L
Posted by beav on Monday, December 6, 2004 5:04 PM
So, Finally, I started my panzer III ausf. L that i got for my b-day in april.
It is also my first airbrush project which is turning out b-e-a-utifully easy.
I would like to make this one special in that i could also be my first partial scratchbuild project. I was wondering if this particular model had Schurzen on it, i saw a little thumbnail of one, but that is all. Also, since I am doing mine feldgrau in color, would they have schurzen at the time they used this color?
I am using tamiya's kit, also, what thickness would be in scale?

I am no expert but I am pretty sure it was the late model M type that had the turret and hull skirts.

Now that doesn't mean that the L didn't as there always exceptions but it wasn't very common as far as I can tell.

I am sure some were field modified with the skirting but I doubt many came with them factory installed.

In my PZ III in action book by Squadron they show a PZ III L command tank with skirting.

Hopefully others can shed more light.

In my PZ III in Action by Squadron Publications there is a picture of an L with Schurzen. I don't think I've seen any drawings of Panzergrau tanks with schurzen. You would want to make it very thin.

According to my "German" PZIII books the Schurzen came out with the "M". But it is possible that a few L 's that got back to be repaired were upgraded with it too.
