J-Hulk's ancient armor collection (lots of pix!)
Posted by J-Hulk on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 10:28 AM
Howdy, folks!Big Smile [:D]
Well, I went on a scanning spree last night, and here are pix of some of my oldest builds, as they exist now, in storage back in the US.

Get a load of the paint and weathering on some of those builds! No "drybrushing" there...that was solid wetbrushing! Ah, I was just a kid. All of these models were built when I was between 10 and 15 years old.
Have a look and a laff!

The pix:

Look at all that Monogram! A token Tamiya Tiger II (Panzer Gray, no less!) and an Italeri Jeep and M4A1, too:

Some 1/25 and 1/35 Tamiya, with a sprinkling of Italeri and Monogram:

1/48 Aurora, Revell (is that T-34 really 1/48?? No way!), and some 1/35 Italeri (never finished that Hetzer) and Monogram (looks like I drybrushed that halftrack with a hotdog!):

1/25 Tamiya Tiger I and Centurion. Who needs rubber tires, anyway?Wink [;)]

It's a hoot looking at your old builds, ain't it? Tongue [:P]

I hope ya'll had a laff or two, too!Big Smile [:D]

It surely shows how far one has come when looking at the early builds. It's fair to say yours pretty much match my early stuff. Semper Fi, mike

Some real old moldies there. Aren't you amazed at your progress over the years. I don't have too many of mine, but some reside in my son's room.

I think some of that 'wet-brush' weathering on some of those looks cool! That is awesome seeing a blast from the past. Man, I should post some pics of some of my early builds! Yours blows mine away!

J-Hulk,

If you built those when you were only 10 or so, then my hat's off to you bro! Those are outstanding for your age at the time. I rarely bothered to paint my tanks at that age and when I did, I had no concept of "weathering"! My tanks also didn't last long since everytime the 4th of July rolled around signalled their doom with the use of M-80s!
So do you ever consider re-painting them?

Some interesting models there, by the looks of things!
Looks rather like the "job lot" of old second-hand Tamiya AFV models I bought on Ebay
recently.
Are you planning to rebuild/repaint any of these in the future?

Amazing collection you've got there, makes me wish I still had all the models to show for over 25 years of modeling Sigh [sigh]
I don't even have the models from before my moving 4 years ago !

Keep them save, and never get rid of them, that's my advice now !!!

Great fun to look back, eh?Smile [:)]

Thanks for the kind words, too.
I doubt I'll ever repaint any of them. I've already built another 1/25 Tamiya Tiger I, and have another 1/25 Tamiya Centurion and 1/35 Italeri M4A1 in the closet as well.
If I attempted to restore any of them, it would be the 1/48 Aurora M46 and M4A3E8, and the Aurora Panther (not pictured). I wouldn't detail them up, but just replace whatever is missing and give them a nice finish.

I'm keeping all of them though, to be sure!Big Smile [:D]

Your latest builds are among my faves on this site , your E-100 is stellar ! Its funny when you look at builds even a couple years old much less back when you were a teen ! I remember when I was a teen , I loved WWII bombers , I almost never took more than a day to complete one , filling gaps was unheard of ! And that goes without mentioning the excessive fingerprints on the canopy , if there was a severe crime for model murder I for sure would have been convicted on those alone ! Your early builds really aren't that bad at all , I mean an airbrush even in unexperienced hands makes a paintjob go from Blahhh to WOAH ! You ,like I when I was a teen had no airbrush , so you brush painted . Better paints and adhesives also help a lot . As well as applicators , do you remember the old testors tube glue ( in the red and white tube ) They still sell it and many use it . Now they have that needle tip applicator, which I think is the greatest thing since sliced bread ! Cool [8D]

Brian,
Nice looking old stuff.
I think the Revell T-34 was actually in 1/40th scale.

No laughing here, J-hulk. I say those still look good to me. Doing those nice camo pattern with a brush (and safely get away with it) is not an easy feat.

Thanks for sharing.

Wish I would have saved my old stuff, but alas most of my collection went the way of the firecracker as well. To this day I can't imagine why I would spend the time and effort to build them and then just destroy them. Ah youth!!Evil [}:)]

Thanks again for all the kind words, folks!

Philp: Yup, 1/40 sounds about right for that Revell T-34. What was it advertised as?

Beav: The only tank missing a barrel and mantlet is the 1/25 Tamiya Tiger I, and the barrel and mantlet is actually sitting right there in between it and the 1/25 Centurion. Do you see any others without barrels?

Hope ya'll got a kick out of this crusty old batch of plastic!Big Smile [:D]

Brian,
Not sure how they advertised but they did several military kits in that scale. I remeber having a Jimmy and 105mm howitzer from them. Both were very detailed kits.

Nice looking cache, Brian. Like others, mine all went the way of the winds (though not the firecracker winds) many years and moves ago!

These guys look like you did some pretty good work back then, nothing like we see from you now, of course. As for the grey KT, hey, at least it was Panzer grey! If I'd done it, it probably would have been battleship grey!! Who knows, I might have even made it good ol' olive drag, after all, it is a tank!! lol

Thanks, Bill! And Philp for the info.
Yeah Bill, I loved Panzer Gray Tiger IIs as a kid...so much so that I'm determined to do another soon! I have an old 1/24 Bandai Tiger II (Porsche), which is so inaccurate to begin with that a Panzer Gray finish would be the least of its worries!
