Acrylic paint
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 9, 2004 4:13 PM
Ok after working on a few models I have discovered that I tend to use a lot of the basic earth tone colors. Up untill this point I have used the Model Master Enamels and Acrylic paints for my models. But after a run to the local craft store I found they sell 2 ounce bottles of acrylic paint for as low as 99 cents. I have tried using flat black on parts of the Willys Jeep I am building and the results have turned out pretty good. So my question is does anyone else use these types of paint for commonly used colors? I am talking blacks and browns and tans that don't need to be a specific shade of color per say.

No, I haven't tried that. What brand are they, if I may ask?

I don't remember the brand name off hand but they are something similiar to what is listed below. I don't know how well these things will work out in the long run but I thought if I could save a little money on some of my more heaviy used paints...that I might try them out. Like I said I used the black on the fan belt for my Willys jeep and it turned out fine. I just thinned it out a bit with some purified water.

Ah, the difference between acrylic paints. Basically acrylic model paints pigments are ground finer than regular acrylic paints and should end up with a better finish. Model Master puts out a book about their paints and it has a good section on how the paint is made. Its worth reading.

Haven't tried them yet, but I'm pleased with Tamiya and Model Master Paints. Might look into them.

Well again I am sure I wouldnt try to use them to spray a base coat or anything but I thought that they might work ok for when you were trying out some weathering or for common colors like black or white. I dunno...just wondered if anyone else had used them and how they worked out.

I use bottom of the barrel, garbage left-overs to paint groundwork, trees, buildings and such. By the time I'm done with the washing, dry-brushing, colored pencils, pastels, ect., it doesn't really matter what I threw down as a base coat. But for my vehicles, they only get the top-drawer stuff, usually a new bottle, especially if it has been open for a while. I have paints of all types, from the cheapest Mall-Wart junk to Winsor & Newton oils. I use them all.

Its good to hear that I am not the only one who has tried out different types of paints.
