confusion over 3in1 box cover
Posted by beav on Thursday, December 9, 2004 4:43 PM
Ok, so last night i luckily picked up a new Dragon 3in1 ausf C 251/1
But i am confused over the box cover, which shows a combo of the pioneer varient and the 3.7 PaK varient....did this ever happen? I think it looks awesome, also the combo inspires some interesting dio builds...
Also, are those bridging pieces on their to?

Nobody else wanna grab this one?
A quick look through German Combat Engineers in World War II, a Photo Chronicle, yielded several photos of SdKfz 251/7's. None had both bridging equipment and the "Door Knocker". Sounds plausible, but I have not seen any photos of both together. Has anyone else seen any?

Hi, Understand your wonderment here, as I was wondering that too when I saw the box.
Been looking through the 'Schutzenpanzer' book here by Ryton Publishing and it shows one or the other, but not both together. I noticed that in the back of the book the line drawings of the interiors of the /7 and /10 are somewhat different, mainly in the very rear, where the /10 held ammo boxes and the /7 has what I assume to be various engineering items.

Now this isn't to say that such a configuration would not have been possible, as there were lots and lots of adhoc field modifications done to these AFVs--I saw a picture one some site here awhile back of a 251 with a field-added coat of Zimmerit on it!--so combining these two types on one vehicle could not be totally ruled out.

Would kind of like to know if anybody else out there has seen such a photo of a vehicle like this myself.

Good luck and take care, Sgirty

Well, either dragon seems to have hired an artist with showing off both at once, or they have found hidden pictures/buried pics. all in all i like the kit, and the instructions are different, the /10 version, has a lot of ammo stowage, while the /7 has explosives....hmmm a dio of an enginneer vehicle rigged with booby traps/rigging booby traps on k/o tanks....hmmmm, or one guarding a bridge with crew orders detonate if situation untenable, and take out the entire section....lol

I just checked all of the variants of the 251 c and they were not together. Both are separate vehicles. Looks like dragon just got a confused artist.

BTW, I like how it looks on the box too.

I to have seen a photo of this vehicle and in WW II German field commanders could authorize adaptations to suit their needs.

One piece at a time Beav Big Smile [:D]Evil [}:)]

If it did exist, it would have primarily been used as a pioneer vehicle, the gun being for defence rather than offence or assault. Personally I would go that way, with limited ammo carried.

I too thought the box cover was intriguing...I was drawn to the C kit because of the 3.7 cm of the /10 but have to admit the /7 is very interesting also...it's all a plot by Dragon to get you to build all three I tell you! Tongue [:P]

Hi, Think you're right there wbill76, esp. for armor fanatics. Just look at the Sd.Kfz. 251 Ausf.D three-in-one kit. Which, in its own way is a h--- of a deal for Dragon. A possible--probable--sale of 3 of the same kit without having to make new packaging for three seperate models. And, when it come right down to it, the boxes for these kits probably cost more to make and ship that the actual kits inside. Very good marketing strategy for them. Am surprised this kind of thinking hasn't come up before in armor kits as it was for the old 3-in-1 model cars of years ago.

Take care, Sgirty

when you look at the instructions, luckily, there are some seats for the crew, and then racks for ammo /grenade boxes and demo gear, so i could do about half and half storage, since this vehicle has a limited combat duration anyways, since you don't want your trained(and expensive) engineers on the front lines duking it out with tanks like the expendable guys....
