shipping to UK - i despair: Great Models, HLJ, Lucky Models
Posted by nmayhew on Monday, December 13, 2004 3:20 AM
hi guys,

i was thinking of ordering from LuckyModel.com and shipping it surface as i'm in no rush for new kits (huge back log; fiance not happy!Tongue [:P]).

however, i have done this in the past with HOBBY LINK JAPAN (hlj.com) and got done for excess postage as they didn't charge me enough in the first place. not the end of the world, but then my beloved royal mail charges me for the admin of charging me (yes, they really do thisAngry [:(!]).

i also just got stung in a similar way by GREAT MODELS when having 3 sets of resin figs sent over: the value triggered a customs alert[:0] or whatever, and i got stung again.
GM were obviously playing things by the book, but i won't order from them again, as opposed to ebay sellers who know where i'm coming from.

now i don't mind paying shipping, and make my calculations accordingly, but i'm beginning to despair a bit at ever getting anything cheap in from abroad to the UK.Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V]

people stateside just have no idea how expensive it is living equidistant from the 2 sources of most things modelling - the US and the Far East!Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V]

any suggestions/advice?Smile [:)]

kind regards,

Nicholas

i got a Tamiya Challenger 2 for £26.26........................in the UK its normaly £36
a Tamiya Pershing for £23.99........................................in the UK its normaly £31
and a Tamiya 1.48th Kubelwagen for £5.00................in the UK its normaly £10

If I were on that side of the pond, I'd be doing everything possible to get my supplies and kits from European sources. I know that's not always the desired option, but sometimes it's the best option. Aren't there any good hobby shops and online sources in the UK?

Of course, you could always pack up and move to the US...or Hong Kong. Well, maybe not...

in www.hannants.co.uk "we" have the best online store i have seen on the net (hold on, i thought the whole point of the net was to make location irrelevant?Tongue [:P]).

their site is the easiest to navigate by a mile, and has a search engine that is streets ahead of any of the US/Far Eastern sites.

their main problem is that they charge pretty much mainstream UK retail prices for everything, hence i'm sniffing around!

i have been to their main warehouse and they are still a small family run outfit that has just got bigger and bigger (it's enormous!).

personally, whilst i like to look at something before i buy, and enjoy the friendly chat you get in your local hobby shop, i don't see this as a reason to basically pay double what the rest of the modelling world pays (guys, i'm not kidding: the only thing saving my behind right now is that the Pound is on steroids vs the dollar!Laugh [(-D]).

just having a moan about prices, as i haven't done so in a while and need to get it all off my chest!!Angry [:(!]Tongue [:P]Smile [:)]

that's better!Big Smile [:D]

Sorry to hear it friend, I imagine we would pay an arm and a leg if we ordered from the UK.

I've ordered from LuckyModel to the US and didn't have any issues with postage. Besides being so expensive that is :).

Yes, it makes location irrelevant when it comes to accessing the data.

When it comes to shipping the goods it still goes by terrestial means and is governed by terrestial rules.

Commonly known that the British postal system is one of the most expensive ones.
