Wash for Olive Drab
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 8:11 AM
How do you guys feel about the post highlighting wash for olive drab armor -- black or dark brown? I'm working on my first OD build-up in years, an M101 howitzer, and I'm at the wash stage. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

can you describe the gun or post a picture of your kit, cause I think we have a few of them on display around were I'm stationed and I might be able to get you a good refference picture?

Ok, sure. It is an M101 howitzer. I am painting mine for WWII, as that's what the Italeri model represents. Here's some box art from the kit if it helps:

While of course it will be great to see pics of the actual magilla, my question is more about modeling technique, about the kind of wash you'd use on OD.

Thanks,
Larry

I have used black artist oils for my washes on olive drab before.

It works good for me. You might want to try it on a parts box piece before attempting it on the actual project.

Hey, Redleg, sounds great! Let me ask you, though, what is RonUSMC's webpage? Could you give the url?

Thanks so much for taking the pics!

ok, I tried these myself and they both take you to the main page, if you go to the general model discussion once you get in that thread, you'll see some topics that start with sticky, it's the one with the free online image

Black works fine. 'Brown' can range from raw sienna (red brown) to Burnt Umber (dark brown) some will make the 'lowlights' look too light, others work just fine. If you want something in between, try using brown and darkening it with black.

(Waves magic wand.) There ya go! I took care of it for you. Wink [;)]

Seriously, though, it's a rank. Beginners here get an appropriate beginner's title -- snap together is pefect for this modeling forum. It has nothing to do with what you actually build -- it is an indication of how many posts you have made here. You just passed the 10 mark, so now, like me, you are "box stock."

BTW, don't take titles too seriously. I am on some boards where idiots who post tons of gibberish have exalted titles just because they post their garbage all over the board, a hundred messages every day! [:0]

Question [?] What thread is that?

Can you e-mail them to me, and I'll just host them and put them up here for others to see?

BTW, are those guns OD?

Whoa! Thanks a bunch. Very cool to see the real deal. Will help with a little superdetailing too.

So every square in of the gun would be OD?

We Larry Dunn's are a dime a dozen! There's a Larry Dunn in the band Earth Wind and Fire too. And some prominent machine politician in Pennsylvania. I never worked in law book publishing, though. I wonder if the guy from Earth Wind and Fire did? Wink [;)]

Howdy, Ron!

Sure enough--I recognize your name: an FSM contributor. We just ran your "muddying armor" article in the May issue (so, folks, pay attention to what this guy says Cool [8D]). AND I saw the little blurb in a recent issue of Reminisce about the Allis-Chalmers(?) snow tractor you're restoring. (I've encountered a number of modelers who also have serious "full scale" projects going.) Glad to see you've found our forums!

The only way to change your forum rank is to post a whole bunch o' messages on the Forum and work your way up through the ranks! It's basically our modelers' twist on indicating how active a user has been on the forum. Full explanation in this earlier thread: http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1991

Larry_Dunn: It was a long shot. I don't recollect the Larry I knew ever mentioning an interest in armor modeling, but he did want to move out West to a state with fewer restrictions on carrying firearms--so I thought there might be a connection. Wink [;)] (He did eventually move to Colorado, which is how we lost touch.)

Great discussion here, BTW, folks! Big Smile [:D]
