Israeli Tank help
Posted by styrene on Monday, June 9, 2003 11:48 AM
Anyone out there know of a conversion kit or set to build the Israeli Mag Ach tank (not sure I spelled it right). If I remember at all correctly, the tank is basically a U.S. M-60 variant with Russian T-55/62/72 tracks and appropriate drive sprocket, and an angular, up-armored Isreali turret with the Rheinmetal(sp?) smoothbore gun (same as in the Merkava). There used to be a resin set for the Tamiya or AMT M-60 about 10 or so years ago, but I believe the company went out of business--thankfully. The castings were atrocious...but then again, resin and aftermarket companies were just beginning to take off. Also, any sources of reference material?
Thanks for all the help in advance,
Gip Winecoff

Have you tried searching www.aefdesigns.com ? Click on page 2 of the Israeli armor page. It's there.

Robin,
Thanks for the heads-up. Apparently, AEF didn't go out of business as I had heard they had. Have you any recent experience with these guys? Same owners, etc? Their moldings were pretty bad way back when...

The last item I had of theirs was a T-72M1Plus turret. It was really nice. Before that, it was the early 90s when I had last seen an AEF Designs item. I do hear they are rather hit-n-miss though.

Your spelling was not that bad, Gip, it is pronounced "Mag'ach". Wink [;)]
The Mag'ach still has the 105mm gun used on the M60, if I remember it right. The Merkava has been upgraded with the Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore meanwhile. The Mag'ach also uses the Merkava all-steel tracks now (which are indeed derived from the Soviet style tracks seen on the T-55/62/72 series you mentioned). The turret of the Mag'ach 7 is made up of a passive Chobham-type laminate armor, unlike the Mag'ach 6 which used the Blazer explosive reactive armor bolted to the standard M60 turret. Like Major Gronovius already mentioned, the AEF Designs set is the only one out there. If you need reference, I have some pictures for you. Mail me and I will mail them to you if you want. Here is a site that has some good info:

I recently bought a Sheridan turret from AEF, at first I was a little disappointed, but it worked up very nicely. The search light was great as were some other parts in the kit. Over all I classed it's quality as satisfactory. For what it's worth.
