Info on the Red Ball Express....
Posted by Jeeves on Saturday, June 14, 2003 7:55 AM
Just found out about a distant relative who was a Red Ball Express driver and am thinking of moving away from my area of comfort (1:48 scale WWII aircraft) and trying to build him the truck he drove. Anyone know where I can find info??

hummm thats a good question...the red ball express was a ww2 express resupply line..they got the name from the fender flag they flew on the fenders...if any body could help you on that one would be "Gun Truck" on armoramma web page..dont know if he's here or not..i'll let you know if i dig anything up...my late grand father..was also a member of the same transport company

When I see video of Red Ball Express they appear to be driving the 2.5 ton truck. Sometimes the truck has the canvas cover on and other times the back is open. R.B. Express-they got the job done! Good luck!

Well-- tried to register at armorama to ask Guntruck, but in order to post, I have to register...so I did and it's been almost 24 hours and I still haven't gotten an email confirmation with my password so that I can actually post!!

So I sent the site a message through their contact link- but nothing yet. I even went to GunTuck's website and tried to email him there, but he has some email filter set up so I am waiting for confirmation for him to actually read my email.....*sigh*

Well-- between GunTruck and my relative (from this point forth known as Art), I found out more ;)

He drove the GMC 2.5 ton 6X6...so I ordered the Tamiya 1/35 scale 6X6 from rollmodels...should be here in 2-3 weeks

One thing while I am waiting....in listening to his audiotapes about the war, Art talks about always hauling gas in his truck...lots and lots o jerry cans. So I have a question-- I see the Tamiya kit comes with jerry cans-- bit it doesn't say how many?? And if not many, is there a company that makes just jerry cans for 1/35??

Both Italeri and Tamiya used to have Jerry Can kits. If you have the option, get the taleri ones, they were far more accurate than the Tamiya kit. Seems like whoever did the masters for Tamiya couldn't cound to three so they wree one handle short.

Thanks shermanfreak...

I looked both of them up....it seems the Tamiya kit comes with a mix of German and US jerry cans along with drums and buckets.....think I will stay away from those....the Italeri kit looks good-- I may wait until I have a sense of how much room there is in the bed before I order them.

OK...so being a 1:48 scale WWII aircraft guy moving onto this 1:35 scale truck project-- how difficult will the transition be?? Has anyone built the Tamiya kit? It seems pretty detailed right down to the decal choice for the Red Ball Express....and besides jerry cans, I think that's all I'll need. His truck didn't have a defensive gun on it....I know this as he said he "liberated" a French flag and strung it up from the empty gun bracket...and got some nice-looking French girls that way ;)

Ahh sorry... just remembered my main question-- does the Tamiya GMC kit come with the ability to model the special blackout lights on the truck?? Thanks...

Jeeves - I made my way over here after you mentioned the Login Problems over at Armorama.com. Big Jim has had a few recent problems with password emails getting bounced back to him as undeliverable. I bet your's was in that batch. He's been working on solving specific ones, so if you're still inclined, just go there and find the Site Talk Forum. You can post anon there and get the problem ironed out quickly!

Jeeves,
Whatever happened with this project? I ask because I am starting a similar one for someone here at work.
I know I saw a cargo truck load for the Tamiya kit that had a whole bed full of Jerry cans (think it was a on piece casting you just paint and set in).

Tamiya has the GMC 2-1/2 ton cargo truck (deuce and a half). You can get cargo packages from a couple places or roll your own. With some research you can convert this kit to the long-wheel-base version.
But don't forget the AutoCar & Federal tractors that pulled the 6-ton & 12-ton trailers (I think that's right). I believe you can get these from DES (France) and somewhere else in Europe but you gotta really want to have 'em 'cause they cost ... That's stopped me from building a RBX "diorama" ....
