Israeli Merkava Main Bat. DML, Academy, or Tamiya?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 12:50 PM
I was looking to get a one of these.

The ?Enhanced? version from Academy with the photo etched parts seems really nice.

Has anyone heard anything about any of these kits? For instance, which is better? Which should be avoided??? So on?.

Well, kind of an easy question with several answers. If you want a Merkava 1, Tamiya's kit is your only choice. Just saw one marked at $20 at my local store (I helped a mom pick it out for her son going to an 11 yr old's birthday). This is a decent kit and is well engineered like most Tamiya kits. Has some motorization holes, but easily taken care of.

If you want a Merkava 2 or 3, then get Academy's kits. They come in a few variations, enhanced ones come with the little metal balls & chains used to defeat RPG rounds. Some come with mine rollers. Trumpeter makes a bad copy of this kit that is to be avoided. Academy kits are very good.

The only DML Israeli tanks made are the M50 and M51 Super Sherman and Isherman.

Rob's right. Go with the Academy Merk II and III. I put together the Merk II several years ago; the fit and finish are superb. The only thing that may take some getting used to is the vinyl used for the tire portion of the road wheels. You'll definitely want to scratch-build the shot trap for the rear turret, or get the aftermarket stuff. I have the mineplow version in my hope-to-be-built-soon stack. BTW, I've heard some good things about the DML Shermans, but don't have any in my collection.
