I use Humbrols Polished-steel as the main coat, followed by a drybrushing of rust. Lastly, I dry-brush the track teeth and and other worn areas with a very light coat of silver. It seems that many pros as well as average modelers use their own system. There was a good article in the Sept. 2002 FSM by Lynn Kessler that looks pretty good. Might work for you. Good Luck.

Tank tracks are a touchy thing, so I'll give you my two cents worth and you can go from there. Tiger tracks are all steel dead tracks, they would be a dark steel gray if the tracks were new. Your dio sounds like your tracks (and wheels) should be in a basic earth tone with bright steel highlights on the points that contact the cobblestone road. Late production Tigers had all steel rimmed wheels as well and those would "clean" themselves very quickly wearing against the tracks while running on the road. There are as many ideas about track color out there as there are modelers, so I use the rule "if I'm happy with it, it's okay".

Painting Tiger Treads

Okay list, I promise...this will be my last request for help! Im working on a Tiger I, Late Version. Im at the point where it is time to paint and assemble the tracks/treads.

What IS the proper color for treads? My reflex is to paint them steel (bright) and then repaint them black, giving me the option of scraping the black paint to expose the underlying silvery steel. However, this feels too 'clean' and my objective is a 'working' Tiger. The Tiger will be sitting on a street in Carentan (prior to the 101st's attack) so the idea is that it has spent some time on the road (though given our air superiority, it would have been doing some interesting traveling).

So can anyone offer any suggestions or example photos?

Am I being too anal about this?

Cheers and Semper Fi,
