Correct shade of green for U.S. M113 in Vietnam?
Posted by TANGO 1 on Thursday, July 3, 2003 4:47 AM
Blush [:I]I know that this may seem like a silly question. But I am really stuck on this! I've tried olive drab, which looks O.K. but my instuctions say to use dark green. I've used this shade before and it just looks too dark to me.
I normally build aircraft and this is my first attempt at a U.S. amour subject, as I'm having a bit of trouble here could some of you point me in the right direction?
I tend to use Humbrol enamels, so if someone knows the right paint no. I'd be very grateful!

Thanks,

Darren.

Remember that the first units arriving in Vietnam had their vehicles painted in a "parade" type finish of OD green mixed with gloss black to give a deeper finish. Later M113s came painted in the normal dull OD. Solution would be to mix some OD with some black to see if you can match the color used or add some lighter OD to the dark green to lighten it a tad.

Many thanks, Robin. I'll try mixing the colours and see how I get on.

Much appreciated,

Darren.

Hey thanks Capt.Caveman! Those pics are great! I'm building this kit (the Academy ACAV) for my friend who's a M113 fanatic. I have just finished a small diorama base to put it on. So far, it looks OK for a first attempt. I took Robins advice and added a little black to my OD paint and it's worked out pretty well. The only problem I've had is fitting the ready made tracks-I snaped one set while trying to fit them!
Still, at least I can hide my error with the side skirts!

Thanks for your help,
Regards,

Darren.

AFV club make an after market set for the M113 (i think there working tracks) if you break all your tracks they might be better

Thanks for the info. I'm praying it won't come to that-but knowing my luck, it probably will!

Cheers,

Darren.

AFV Club's M113 track (US style) #AF3501 are out of production and were not working. They still make the NATO style, which is only really appropriate for the Canadian and German variants. Fruil makes a set of working metal tracks, but they cost just under $30.
