another option is to paint it panzer grey with white outline turret numbers (#801 for example) and a heavy coat of dust - this was how they first appeared in north africa at the start of the campaign .... as for the figures if they are the double breasted black tunic, these were replaced with tropical issue jackets - only the black head caps were continued to be worn

I would just go straight out DARK or DESERT YELLOW. Probably Desert Yellow

I agree Redleg, for a Sandkelb such as they used In Afrika Corp, I will use varying ratios of Tamiya's Desert Yellow, Dark Yellow and Buff, with a little white. I try to use different amounts on diffferent models to add some variation to the weathering.

here are three colors from Tamiya that Iuse as most came in the tan color anyway.

I just bought the Tamiya Panzer IV Ausf.D and want to make it as one used in North Africa. There are decals for a Africa Corps model but not sure what colour to paint it? Also I want to keep the figures with it but not sure if they have correct uniforms for an Africa Corps. If they are correct what colour should I paint them?
