Who builds 1/72 armor out there
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 7, 2003 9:50 PM
Hey Guys,
I mostly build 1/48 aircraft. But a buddy of mine got me into building 1/72 armor as a side project when I'm between working on aircraft. I can say that I've become really addicted to it. It's cheap, plentiful, and I can build a piece in about a day or so.

I'm wondering how many of you armor guys out there build 1/72 armor. Just looking for some more friends to talk and converse with.

I'm currently finishing my first scatchbuilt conversion, an Ersatz Panther. During the Battle of the Bulge, the German's disguised Panther tanks to look like M10 tank destroyers. An easy conversion. I'm hoping to have pics on the web this weekend.

Thanks

I build 1/72 armor, among other things. Currently I'm working on a Eastern front Diorama with a Tiger, Wirbelwind, T-34, and Sd.Kfz 251/9.

I occasionally build 1/72 armor but mostly 1/35. I am an armor enthusiast and figure enthusiast. my next project will be in 1/72 and im trying to decide wheather to do a eastern front battle or a roman legion.

I do. Most of my AFVs are at that scale (or similar: 1/76). Lots of choice nowadays, decent kits and good prices and above all, I do not need a house extension to display my dioramas!

Ever since I got back into the hobby, I have been sticking mostly with 1/72, with some 1/76. Between all of the kits and figures available, it's pretty easy to model just about any era. The overall lower cost and smaller size is a real plus.

Right now I'm working on a dio of Mongols vs. Teutonic Knights, with close to 100 figures involved. Couldn't do it in a bigger scale.Cool [8D]

I'm just getting started, but I'm already addicted...1/72 is way cool for "making the scene". I'm planning on a couple of dioramas to begin with: a small desert refueling depot for a Challenger, and then a winter theme ( I haven't decided which MBT will star in that one... I just like the idea of tanks in the snow).
Please send any construction tips, even the obvious ones. I'm so green, I need all the help I can get !

Guilty as charged. I can place them beside my 72nd aircraft for size comparison. I was backdating a Revell M-2A2 Bradley into an early variant when my kit got sucked into my Davis-Monthan shelf.

Frostygirl, you should check out Doug Chaltry's website http://www.ontheway.us/default.htm. It has all kinds of pics and info on 1/72 armor, and lots of construction reviews.

yeah I like doing 1/72 for fun too, and yes it is very easy to do one in a day, but for more serious modeling I do 1/35. I do 1/72 because it is very cheap and you can find just about every main vehicle in it.

I do too. Quick builds and easier to display.

Thanks guys,
I'm now starting on WWII tanks. I hope I can put a pic of the Erstaz Panther I just finished this week on this site. The two tanks below are my first attempt at 1/72 armor. They're just OOB Italeri/ESCI kits of an Abrams and T-62.

after looking at those I would be ashamed to put my first attempts on here, but those aren't your first models. mine was my first model.

Nice work. I build 1/72 and 1/76 for space, convenience and variety. I build a lot of soft-skinned vehicles to go with the aviation dioramas I've built.

No, I build 1/48 aircraft. But those are my first armor models I've built since I was a teenager (about 14 years).

Just showing off again with my 1:72 late/early Tiger 1 mishmash.. Built this a few months ago as a re-entry into modelling.. Just love the way its turned out. I'm not at all hasseled about its accuracy, because I think it turned out great regardless...

Count me in as well. I guess my main reasons for building 1/72 are the fact that they don't take up alot of room and that you can display them with 1/72 aircraft. Quite a few new kits and manufacturers have come out in the last few years so there's plenty of variety these days. I'm just starting my 50th 1/72 vehicle, the Revell Pz IVJ and, so far, it's a really nice build. And, just to second Tony's suggestion, if you want to learn about 1/72 then On The Way is the place to go.

That's all that matters. but I'll give you a compliment too, it's awesome. I like people who do their own thing and don't worry about accuracy!!!Cool [8D]

I build a lot of 1/72 and 1/76 armor for the variety and for the space-saving. I also build a lot of British and US soft-skinned vehicles and artillery, especially AAA, for use in the aviation dioramas I like to build.

www.ontheway.us is a cool site. I try to ignore the 1/76 slams though. I build both, and I don't care.

Folks:
Thanks for the replies, especially the info on On The Way... great site !
Bernie: the Abrams and T -62 are really great models.
In fact, all of this work is inspiring to me and I just hope that someday I'll build something as good as the stuff I'm seeing here.
In the meantime, I've got to put tracks on the Chieftain. I put a coat of Tamiya Olive Drab on it, but I'm thinking it looks too dark.
Any suggestions ? Were any Chieftains deployed to Kosovo, or would that camouflage be totally wrong for this tank ?
Thanks for the help !

i used to. right know i build 1/35th scale armor. but my first tank was a 1/72 scale cheiftain from airfix. i seriously do not recommend airfix because mine was warped SOOO bad that when i opened it i threw it out. i bought some other reeeely cool one after that from the same company and it was just as bad. but ya, 1/72 scale armor is awesome and i'd love to make a diorama out of a couple. too bad i haven't the slightest clue how to make them tho. I do as well. I'm glad to see so many others that do too! I build them so I can place them next to my 1/72 scale aircraft. I have over 385 armor pieces built in 1/72 and 1/76 scale. My two most recent builds were a Russian Su 152 SP Gun and a Russian BRDM with Konkurs ATGW's. Smile [:)]

Here is a picture of my Tiger I tank that I built about 22 years ago:

This is also a fun picture, considering the model itself is only a little over 1 inch long! It still had about 27 pieces to it though:

Sarge:
My Airfix Chieftain was in good condition, no warpage and pretty good fit except for the turret which had a small gap between the left and right halves that needed some filler. I'm almost done with an Airfix Sheridan kit that almost falls together by itself. The Airfix kits (and some others) have 'build difficulty' levels on the side of the box so you can gauge how much effort it will take to complete the model. Although I haven't built one yet, REVELL Germany's kits look good... I'll be building their Challenger next, I think.

Those AFV kits from Airfix were actualy quite good. The Sheridan was indeed quite easy to build, a well enginered kit in fact. In terms of accuracy, however, they can not be compared to the later ESCI, Fujimi, Hasegawa and Revell kits. But they gave me hours and hours of fun back in my younger years and indeed up until fairly recently when I re-built one of their WWI MkIV kit. The Airfix catalogue was full of interesting subjects too.

I like Airfix as well. The last Airfix kit I built was this one:

I won a first place for that in my local I.P.M.S. meeting contest. :-)

are you interested in modern British armor ? i'm still trying to figure out how i should finish painting the Chieftain...box art shows solid green, but I'd like to try something a little more exciting. any ideas ? I'm going to try the Revell Challenger soon, KFOR style...

yeah, it sounds like you just hit on a couple of bad kits there...
have you checked out the On The Way site yet ? dedicated 1/72 armor site with lotsa great info on there for us newies ! (no airfix on there, 'cause it's actually 1/76
according to them...a purist, i guess)
as far as dioramas go, first try and imagine a scene in your head. battle mode or resting between missions, refueling or checking a map. where would the crew be, and what would they be doing ? try and pose figures so that they relate to one another. size the base to fit the elements of the scene, and pose the star of your scene at an angle to the edges of the base.try to put in some differences in elevation in groundwork so it doesn't look like a ping-pong table...
check out the dioramas section on this site, too.
