M1s in "Hulk"
Posted by J-Hulk on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 9:41 PM
Saw "Hulk" last night (great flick!) and was impressed by the array of modern weoponry they throw at him, like Comanches and F-22s.
There were also some "M1s," but they looked like Centurions or Chieftains dressed up like M1s.
I recall hearing something about such fake "M1s" created for the film "Courage Under Fire," and was wondering if these might be the same vehicles.
For those of you who have seen "Hulk" and have any idea of what I am talking about, what do you think?

Haven't seen the movie yet but from what I've seen from the ads the tanks look like they are CGI like most of the stuff in the film, but as I haven't seen it yet I can't realy say. Be funny if they were the Centurions out of "Courage Under Fire" be an Aussie actor and Aussie armour.

I saw the Hulk a few weeks back, and the tracks did'nt look like either the old style or the newer style Abrams tracks. I'm guessing they were at one time, some other type of tanks built up and around to make them look like M1's. panzeriv most of the scenes with the M1s are CGI, but there are a few with 'real' tanks.

Word on the street is they used Centurions dressed to look like the Abrams just like they did in Courage Under Fire. Tank is way too small in the movie. I'm planning to do a diorama of one of those fake Abrams, I picked up a Hasegawa M1E1 to mate with another tank.

Yeah, the tracks and what you see of the running gear sure looks like Centurion gear. Even the CG stuff was the same, I think. I'll have top check it out again.

Good to know you can swing an M1 around by the tube and toss it a klik or two and still have the crew walk away from it!

QUOTE: Those realistic, modern tanks that shot a Desert Storm volley across the summer screen in "Courage Under Fire" are actually a blast from the past.
Because the production crew didn't have access to authentic M-1 Abrams tanks used against the Iraqi army, the film's technical expert, Rory Aylward, trekked to Australia to acquire surplus British Centurion tanks of Korean War vintage.

Here's a very interesting (short) article about CUF and making movies with Armor in general, and about military suport in making movies.

QUOTE: After the production ended, Lindbergh Hollingsworth, a junior production executive, got the order from the high command on the Fox lot.
"They said, 'Find a buyer for the tanks,'" Mr. Hollingsworth said.

I like this part. Typical Movie logic. Spend $1m on a prop. Make $100m on the movie. Sell prop for $100k. buy back prop for $2m in five years to make another movie. The Pentagon could take lessons from Hollywierd about wasting money.
