If you could show me, I could draw it. But I'd be interested if there was an easier method.

I would like to do a large scale SdKfz 221, M8 or similar wheeled armoured car. I know I could probly find kits but I want to scratch build. I was thinking I would be easier for a first scratch-build to do one of these that was made of mostly flat panels. I need a set of drawings in a known scale to build from. I think I can handle some resin casting , small soldering and other techniques, I just need plans.

Hey Derek,

Contact Shermanfreak. He has a bunch of scale drawings of German equipment (amongst others) for sale.

Probly using them for trade fodder. Surprised he doesn't have a real Sherman.Cool [8D]

P.S. If they were on CD in .DXF or .DWG format it would be cool.

Ok Derek .... this is what I have. They are 1/35 scale line drawings, they show 4 views of the vehicle but do not show what the angles or dimensions are. What you can do however is use a scale rule on them to determine the lengths of each panel, etc. I no longer have the German prints and never did have one of the 221. But I do have one of the M8 if that will help you any.

Shermanfreak,
Sounds good. Measurements should be pretty easy, I did find a program that lets you input the corner points of an angled plate and then outputs a flat plate, have to go hunting for that again.

I also considered the M3A1 scout car but those fenders are a little scary for a first scratch-build.

If you've got a 3 view image or bitmap, I can convert it to DWG or DXF format for ya.
I got a nifty piece of software that does that and has been an immense help in my practice.

I don't have drawings yet but i may take you up on the offer when I get some. I have tried some raster to vector conversion software and have been really disappointed and for some reason I can't import to my CAD from the scanner.

Nah, you gotta save it as a jpg or bmp first, then use the import image command. Each package is different and have thier own skeletons in how the command is implemented
I've been using scan2cad by softcover (http://www.rastertovector.com) and have been rather
successful with it. Admittedly it takes quite a bit of image editing to get the vectors right but otherwise
it's been good to me. beats traditional methods to get the info into CAD.

higher res is better

I've used scanvector and wintopo. scan vector gave some OK results and wintopo gave me a nice Topographic chart of a P-38!

I use TurboCAD ( www.imsisoft.com ) mine is the free version, actually an older version which was released as a learning edition when V8 came out, and the Trace function doesn't work even though it should.

The Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground USED to sell blueprints (about 0'-2"=1-0" scale) and / or 1/35 scale drawings of several dozen US vehicles. Unfortunately, the service is no longer provided.
A few years ago when I requested a copy of M7 snow tractor prints, they said they weren't doing them any more. When I explained I was RESTORING an M7, they told me to get lostAngry [:(!]Angry [:(!]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]
You'd think they could've run off ONE copy!
However, when they were doing the prints, they were super cool blue line arsenal prints.
