Preparing for new project: Help Needed
Posted by Moses on Monday, July 28, 2003 1:12 PM
OK as most of you know, I am a huge German Armor freak!! But after some persuation from Rob aka Shermanfreak and Mr. Lemur himself (Mike/renarts) I am going to be building a Tamiya Cromwell for my next project (Yes Erock, I have temporarily turned to the dark sideEvil [}:)])

Now I have the Tamiya kit (lovely as it is), Modelkasten workable tracks, Eduad Photoetched brass, and Jordi Rubio Barrel....I migt possibly get Verlinden's update set, but I don't want to get to crazy with the cash (I mean this is an Allied vehicle, not really worth that much Tongue [:P]).

My request is for some of you to give me some tips on the painting schemes (types of paint/color) and placement of stowage, etc. Consider me a Allied Armor nOOb.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Mo/Rob

Hi Moses. I probably won't be of the most help to you, but I'm pretty sure that the tank was painted typical British dark green. I have never seen one in a cammo pattern, though there might have been one. I also haven't seen any with any stowage gear, say like the German tanks. One photo in a book of mine shows some foliage around the turret. You'll have to wait for one of the more knowlegable "Allied modelers" for help. Good luck. One question, since I eyed this model myself, but turned it down because it didn't have seperate tracks, is how much were the tracks you bought and do any other companies make some(not sure I want workable treads). Thanks.

if you put it in a Diorama you could put a Panther next to it and track links all over the turret.. the forth battalion of the Coldstream guards in 6th Guards tank brigade used them with a captured Panther Ausf G named Cuckoo.
you could try a whitewash that has washed of in time

The british had several different types of cromwells on the d-day invasion. If you look at some of the d-day books (juno) or some of John Keegan's books on WW2 you'll find some picts of "loaded" cromwells I am sure
3d modelling is an option a true mental excercise in frusrtation

As per my comments before Rob ....... green .... but I do like the idea of a whitewash.
I even have a pic of that scheme.

You'll probably finish this one about the same time as your Panzer III that seems to have vanished from the face of the earth. LOL

Pics .... We Want Pics

Seriously though,

Sounds like a fun project, I want to see pics of your progress. I still have that M4A3 Sherman on my shelf so, I may join you for another on the "Darkside" Just to make sure you make it back!!!

That's funny, Moses asking for help Tongue [:P] Big Smile [:D] Wink [;)]

Can't say anything on the paint scheme's for ya, but I did look at the Verlinden set and I think it would probably be good on there with the stuff you already got. What's another $20 bucks or so??? Big Smile [:D] It does have some crates and stowage and from there you could throw a few "personal" type items on it and make it look good.

Or you could model it blown up by one of you Tigers Big Smile [:D]

Thanks for the help guys...

Erush, I was considering detailing the interior and blowing that sucker up...but I really do not want to spend to many modelling hours on Allied Armor (oh Shermanfreak that had to hurt)..plus Star Wars Galaxies has made a dent in my modelling time Angry [:(!] ( damn game is addicting)....

Erock...you mention hot pink...well Shermanfreak might be able to give some insight on a furure project we have in store for the forums Wink [;)]

Shermanfreak...the Panzer III is almost there bud, I told ya!!! I just need to get the damn sandbags done right. I did a first run with them and was not to happy with the texture I had created. I am going to give it another run this weekend...plus..I have been detailing the Konigstiger. All I need to do is get the tracks done on that baby, and it will be painting and weathering time.

Thanks Wib, I'll give it a look...I need all the reference material I can get.

Yeah Caveman I know of teh Panther that your talking about. I have seen a few pics of it, as well as seeing it modeled in an issue of AFV Modeller Magazine.

Hey Tigerman, the ModelKasten workable tracks that I got are awesome...they cost $29.99 US. I never, ever use vinyl tracks!!! Even with Allied Armor Wink [;)]

Again, thanks for all the help guys, much appreciated. Once I get the Panzer III L on a base I will get pics up and start building that Cromwell!Evil [}:)]

Cheers

Hi, Moses.
Funny you should mention the Cromwell...I was just thinking about putting one or two under the E-100 I just finished!
As others have mentioned, I reckon British dark green is the way to go, in as much as that's the only color I've ever seen a Cromwell in.
But it ain't like I've seen 'em all, so you'll have to listen to the British experts. Check out any site that has Tony Greenland's work. Seems like every time I turn around he's knocked out another great Cromwell or Crusader or Firefly!

Thanks J-Hulk.

I really only like airbrushing in Tamiya Acrylics...so what color in Tamiya's acrylic range fits British drag Green...would it be just XF-61 Dark Green?

Thanks again.

heres a couple of photos for you
this photo is taken from Concords book British Tanks of WW2 by David Fletcher ISBN 962-361-651-1(will delete it next week)

a Tog 2 in cammo. i dont know when the cammo was used or if it was used by anyone , the Tog 2 was a prototype in 1941

or the A33 cammo

the cammo might just be a Bovington made up cammo or might have been used on british armour
hope any of it helps
