                        ive seen them mounted on m1's, m60a3's, and m60a1's barrel, what exactly do they do?

                        In a nut shell, the hoffman devise is a tank main gun simulator. When hooked up to the tank and "MILES" gear as the main gun is fired a simulator charge is fired creating smoke and sound. The article Claymore68 posted will fill in all the details.
