Painting over Zimmerit
Posted by okieboy on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 3:55 PM
Hello all you happy Treadheads,

I'm researching Zimmerit, and how to apply it to a scale model. In the field, the troops would have to paint their tank numbers on over the uneven surface of the Zimmerit. Well, I will have to do the same with my model. The only probelm is that I suck as an artist. Sad [:(] I was hoping that you folks might have some suggestions for me so that I don't turn a perfectly great mid version Tiger I into fodder in some diorama! Help![:0]

I have some of Eduard’s masks on the way, and as soon as I get them, I’ll let you know how they work.

A technique that I have used in the past is to mask off a rectangle the size of the character that you want, and just fill it in by hand. The mask is just for reference, another words, you don’t want to go any bigger than that. Then move on to the next character with the same sized mask.

As usual I would suggest trying this out on scrap first.

hope this helps you

Thanks edog. I suppose that I could also go one step further and cut tape with an x-acto blade and use that as a form of stencil. Let me know about the masks and how well they work.

If you want to go the dry transfer route, Archer transfers has some sheets that are made specifically to go over zimmerit. I have a couple of sheets for the Wiking Panthers and they are very nice.

I have tried cutting stencils, and it never worked well for me, but if you do it, i would love to hear how. And yah, i will let you know how the Eduard masks work.

I think Moses's pics of his Pz III are done with Eduard Masks.

When I paint my numerals or insignia's over Zim I use Eduard's express masks for the insignia, and Verlinden-production stencil templates for the numerals.

If you were to use Dry Transfers, I suggest you use solveset to allow it to settle into the crevices of the zim, with a little dullcote over the top.

Cheers

Thanks gents,

I'm curious about the dry transfers that kaleu talked about. I'll have to scope them out. If they look funky, I'll try Verlinden. Thank you all for your knowlege and insight.

Micro-Sol will also work. It really softens the decal so it can conform to the area.

Just be really careful to get it in position before applying, once the Micro-Sol is on, the decal cannot be repositioned.

I too have used the decal microsol over Zimmerit (both self applied and kit manufactured versions). I have found this to be satisfactory, but am leaning to getting stencils because of decal silvering
