Ugliest tank of WW II?
Posted by tigerman on Thursday, July 31, 2003 8:21 PM
I saw a post on the aircraft site that asked what was the ugliest aircraft? So I'm curious what you think was the ugliest tank of WW II? For me I'd say just about anything French. Dead [xx(]

I kind of disagree with you all here, I'm afraid. I do love all those funky looking monster tanks with turrets and guns sticking out from everywhere...! And the Char B1bis is, I think, a very neat looking machine... In any case, better looking than a Maus for instance... Still, my 'ugliest tank of WWII award' would have to go to the Churchill tank...

My vote will go to the Churchill too! It's almost impossible to look at it for more than 5 secs before getting disgusted...
Ciao

P.S.: it could be ideal for diets: look at it for a minute and your stomach cannot hold anything for a day!!!

Hmmmmm....I'd have to say it's a toss-up between the aforementioned Churchill and KV-II.
I've seen some real ugly specimens of test vehicles, but no names come to mind.

How about "Most Beautiful Tank?" If there is such a thing.
I'd say the Japanese Type 74. Low, flat, smooth and cool.
But's that 's for another topic, eh?

S-Tank in WWII? mmmmmmm
Churchill for sure and most of the British tanks for that fact.
I think the T-35 and the French tanks are cool looking things.
Most Dull tank I'd say is the Sherman (sorry shermanfreak)

PanzerIV, I was just answering J-Hulk's question about the most 'beautiful' tank..! I quite like the Sherman, the Calliope in any case! And the M4A3E8 is simply gorgeous.

Most beautiful tank? Come on tanks aren't pretty things, that would make them girly. Some look better then others for sure but beautiful is not a word I would use on a tank. Lets face it tanks are big powerful, menasing things, not a nice little sports car. They are ment to be mean looking.

Just thought of another ugly tank. Not that it's the tank thats ugly but what they did to it. The Panzer IV with the Armour skirts put on it. Makes it look like a Tie Fighter or something. For me a Panzer IV with the long 75mm cannon on it and no added armour skirts are a good looking (not beautiful) tank. And yes I know the armour was added for better protection, just looks crapy.

I think the ugliest are those that have been knocked-out: Barrel at a negative elevation, tracks off the roadwheels, turrets at strange angles, and metal melted due to fire. I think the runner-ups should be the M3 Lee and the Valentine.

i have to agree with DJ here re: most visually appealing (not limited to WWII...) it's gotta be the S tank, with the Abrams and Sheridan 2nd and 3rd for me...in fact, it was an article on the S tank in FSM (an old issue someone was throwing away) that got me interested in modeling armor. it was just so cool and different than anything else i'd ever seen
sorry, i don't know enough about WWII tanks to contribute on the ugliest !

I know it isn't really a tank but the bren carrier is just so wrong, it wierd in shape and has no protection at all from above and has no armour or armourment to speak of, its just a pig ugly motorised trash can. that said my vote has to go to all french tanks, they where as useless as they where ugly, just target practice for the whermacht. i am not belittling the crews that fought in them here, its the tanks that where useless....Greg

First to reply to panzeriv tanks aren't ugly you can see some very nice designs. As for ugliest i have got to say M3 Grant is right up there along with the M2 and the M5 Stuart. I guess the americans didn't start making a really nice looking tank until the M1. As for the Churchill it is one of the better looking tanks of WW2 very tank-like.

the ugliest would have to be the M3 lee. the most beautiful is the tiger 1. The most eye catching is a tie between the king tiger and M4A3 sherman

Besides being tactically useless, the Italian Carrro Veloce CV35 tankette looks like the digestive waste product of another tank. Squat, cramped, thinnly armored and poorly armed, this sad excuse for an AFV makes a M13/40 look like a Abrams. At least in a Bren-Gun Carrier you would have half a chance to bail-out.

Oh this is getting fun. How could I forget the Churchill, which to me looks like a WW I leftover. Iv'e never been a big fan of the Grant either. I disagree about the Panzer IV with Schurzen armor, I personally like it. Visually the best would be a tossup between the Tiger II and the Panther G. Keep the comments coming.

Ooooh, I gotta get my $.02 in on this one....

Ugliest? Hmmm.... ever seen one of the Pershing testbeds with the oversized turret and gun? I think it was a long barrelled 105 gun, but it looked like a normal Pershing was allergic to something and the turret swelled... THAT was ugly!

And what's up with the S Tank lovers here? The thing looks like a friggin doorstop! Tongue [:P] Pneumatic suspension and all. If you get anywhere but right in front of it, its dead.

I agree Jon, S-Tank must stand for Swedish meatball tank. Actually it does look like a doorstop. Best looking modern... of course the M1 Abrams. It rocks!

Not that the Sherman was a pretty tank by any means, but the stuff the french made was just plain U-G-L-Y. As far as attractive tanks, I would pick the USA's M-18 and Germany's King Tiger.

I would have to vote on the Churchill, with the KV-2 a close second. Now the between the wars French tanks or the World War 1 German A7v would win the ugliest ever contest
