Thanks for the comments.  I like the Camelbak as well.  The power pole is actually correct.  It is about 12' tall.  In Iraq they are shorter than what we are used to in the states.  Guess they didn't follow safety codes like we do.  Saw many things that were just "not right" over there.

HeavyArty, Very well done. The Camelback hydration system on Cptn directing the scene is awsome!(crossover knowlage from MTN biking) The only thing is the power pole. It is far too short for the scale. As well the wires need to look as it they were heavier. When I get going on a few armor projects I will welcome your comments.

..the torsos, how does someone get ahold of them?...Let me know if I can get you to cast a few for me!!

Send me an email on the torsos and I'm sure we can work something out.

Oh wait, the road, how did you make the road, I'm sure I missed it down the line, but I need to know your secret on the road, I've tried drywall and it never worked...

For the road, I used Spackling Compound (drywall patch plaster).  I spread it on thinly then smoothed it out with a putty knife.  Once it sets a bit, but not completely dry, I smooth it out further with some water and my fingers.  Just rub it around and you will get a watery paste on the top and it will all smooth out.  Fnally, once completey dry, I sand it with some 200 grit sand paper to smooth it fully.  Then it is ready for paint.  The sidewalk and wall are done the same way, with the lines scribed in after it is dry.

Gino, this is a great dio!  I love the figures, though one observation, I don't kow if you can do anything about it other than just accept it for what it is, but the guy close to the wall, reloading, it looks a little unnatural the way he's holding the weapon.  I know figures are a pain in the butt.  The whole concept is great!  Congrats on a good dio!  BTW, the torsos, how does someone get ahold of them?  I'd be interested in them as I'm going to do an OIF LAV 25 sometime.  Let me know if I can get you to cast a few for me!!  Again, looks great!  Oh wait, the road, how did you make the road, I'm sure I missed it down the line, but I need to know your secret on the road, I've tried drywall and it never worked...

Gald you like it.  Customer liked it too.  For weathering, I gave the whole thing a pin wash of a dark grey-brown color that I mixed together.  I then drybrushed with the original sand color to tone it down and blend it in.  Next, I drybrushed with Testor MM Armor sand, some browns, and a light coat of medium grey.  Lastly, I hit all the areas where I want a bare metal effect with a #2 pencil, just draw directly onto the model.  Hope that helps.  Good luck on your Abrams.

what color did you use for paint Bradley?

It is painted with Testors Model Master Enamel Sand, FS#33531, Testors #1706.  It is an exact out of the bottle match for modern CARC (Chemical Agent Resistent Coating) paint.  Once weathered, it looks just like the ones in the motorpool.

Gino, can you go into a little detail about your weathering techniques? I'm currently doing an M1A1 OIF and just can't seem to get the right look with the techniques I'm using.

And I take it your customer has already received his piece. Was he as blown away as the rest of us? Excellent work!

Edited to say that I didn't edit the post correctly so I just bolded it. Sorry for any confusion.

Oh, sorry about the rank, Arty. Thought you were an Oscar Five already for some reason. So I was just refering to the generic "colonel" as opposed to Lt. Colonel. A few more years. O.K., Major. Won't make that mistake again.

No problem.  Glad you like it and again, thanks for the advice.

As to the Colonel part, thanks, but I am only a lowly Major.  Few more years till I make Colonel.

 Hello, Gino.

My apologies for not responding sooner. I was away from my computer access for a little while.

I really like the completed dio. I am flattered that you mentioned "taking M60A3's advice" about the telephone pole. It looks really good and I think it completed the dio very well.
I can't give you any modeling tips, but I'm glad I was able to help in this way, especially as you seem to always be assisting others, myself included. How many times, I must wonder, has Gino been asked the same questions over and over, only to graciously continue to reply as if it were the first time.
 Great job, Colonel.

They do have some pretty short poles there.  It is about 12 feet tall in scale.

Looks good! Adding the pole was a great touch, I'm no expert by any means on OIF stuff, but the pole looks a little short? Are they like that over there?

Cool scene

Thanks Josh.  Really have no ide on the # of hours that went into it.  I haven't really kept track.  It was a lot though.  I've been working on it since Nov, with a couple week break at Christmas and a week long trip in Jan to break it up.

Not sure how many hours went into it, I don't really keep track.  I have been working on it off and on since November, with a few weeks break at Christmas and a TDY trip in JAN.

Gino, I am confused, if the chip go through the top layer of paint, what color or what do you see? steel?

No steel, just more of the same paint underneath.  Military vehicles get repainted often.  Smetimes the same color, sometimes camo over sand or vice versa.  The subsequent layers of paint don't stick as well as the original factory paint due to oil, dirt, etc. on the vehicle.  Usually, when you get a chip, it will just chip off an upper layer of paint.  An older layer of paint will be below it and show through.

what color primer do army use under the sand color? any idea?

US Army uses red oxide primer.  The CARC paint is done so well though, that you very rarely see any primer, even with rubs and chips.  Usually, a rub or chip will only go through the top layer of paint.  Since we seem to repaint our vehicles often, they don't  go down to primer.

Good luck with your M1A1.  Sounds pretty nice.

Thanks for all the compliments.

Added a couple things to finish it off.  I added the power pole, and straps on the weapons.  Here is the final product.

Actual picture:

My dio:

I scratched the pole using a long, square piece of basswood;  plastruct rod, C beam,  and angle iron pieces; bolts sliced from hex rod; lead foil; some string for wires; and insulators from modern German smoke grenade launchers.

Close up of the pole:

That is it.  It is ready to go.
