M1-E1 paint

I had a friend that spent 3 months trying to find a picture of the M1 in a winter scheme. Very rare......correction non-existant. I don't think any M1 variant has ever been done in a winter scheme other than maybe one or two experimental vehicles. Hope this helps.

frostygirl, just because the Army never painted one in a winter camo doesn't mean you can't model one with it!!! Remember this is supposed to be fun and if you want one you can build it!!! I say go for it because I think it would look pretty good too.

Yeah, I think it would be an awesome sight to see: an Abrams tank with a good Winter camoflage scheme. Think of how it would look with the a good wash and some weathering. Plus, you could create a serious diorama with it. A friend of mine in the US Army Ranger's 10th Mountain Division did a lot of cold weather training. You could incorporate an Abrams in a scenario like that quite easily. Heck, you could even give the diorama cool name like "Frostbite"!

I gotta see the finished product.

just to let you know.....in the finescale modeler modeling 2003 issue in page 90 there is a picture of an M1 that was winterized, hope that this helps, if I can help any further let me know

The History Channel did a special on the Army's Cold Region Test Center in Alaska. They test all sorts of military hardware there and I seem to recall a scene where an Abrams with a winter camouflage scheme goes skidding down an ice covered road. IIRC the scheme looked like one of the colors of the NATO scheme was over painted white.

Wouldn't that have been a sight, an M1 sliding around Moscow?Lol

page 90 of great scale modeling has one done by somebody. he added alaskan U.S. army markings. It looks awesome!!! but then again, an M1 would look awesome painted neon green.... have to try that

We had an M1E1 at Fort Knox in 83-84, it was overall forrest green.

thx to all for ur replies and encouragement... i'm going to do a winter scheme of white w/ dark green and maybe even some grey, even tho' i've got some nice neon green left over from a car project i'm working on (honda civic, tuner-style). it's about the same color as this smilie...

We had M1s when i was stationed in germany, but we never used a winter scheme. Too much trouble to paint. The Major is right as i'm sure the only place an m1 was painted for winter was at alaska. and tigerman we had several occasions where our m1s did not respond to icy conditions: one was where an m1 broke traction going down a hill and slid into a house! no one got hurt. and the other slid into two german military trucks destroying both.

Didn't the original issue of the Tamiya M1 (not M1A1) show it in some kind of winter scheme, with "Yukon" or something in the markings?

hey, Dwight ! i think the Abrams looks good no matter what color it's wearing, i just wanted to do something a little bit different (and get some practice painting camouflage while i was at it). but don't u worry... i'll be building another one in either Desert Storm or Iraqi Freedom scheme one of these days.

You know what would look pretty cool? Completly on a tangent here, but bear with me. How about applying a coat of zimmerite on an abrams kit? Now that'll be different, eh?

Of course the M1 looks good in any color but desert camo always reminds me of its very impressive track record in the Gulf Wars. My first M1 is painted in NATO colors but I repainted it in desert camo. I have just finished an M1A1-HA and just doing the base. It is in desert colors also.

Please show us the pics of your Desert Storm M1 when available.
