Panther Decals >Need Help<
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 2, 2003 9:28 PM
This is one of the kits I was trying to finish this week. I am not sure which decals to use. The Tamiya instructions suck when it comes to this [:-banghead]

Based on my color choice applied which decal set should I use. In addition, IF this kit was in a diorama where would it be?Evil [}:)]

THANKS in advance to all Smile [:)]

Have to wait for some of the GermanFreaks to answer that question.
I just wanted to stop and say great work with the airbrush !!! The finish looks real good.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

Yeah, it looks great, Muzzleflash. Why don't you try painting the marking on? I often find that decals on tanks are a pain. Either too thick, or too glossy, or you get silvering, and have to mess up with gloss and flat varnishes... If you don't want to try it free hand, get some stencils. I guarantee you'll get a MUCH better looking model.

If you enlarge the second picture you can see the decal sheet. I am not sure the difference between the number styles based on the painting applied to the tank. I need pointers on which style and where that would place this tank if I were to put it on a base or dio :)

muzzleflash,
If i am correct and thats the ambush camo then i am thinking that decals would actually take away from the model, i could be wrong...but thats just me. I am not german tank expert but as the Panther may be my next model i can look around and see what i can find.

The closest example I could find by way of color plates is this one ..... the only thing that throws me off is your all green road wheels - was this a personal choice of yours or ???

Nice job muzzleflash. As to where it would be in a diorama I would say Normandy. As for the decal question all the pictures I looked at in my books appear to be a lighter color, all the pictures are in B/W but that would seem to me to rule out the black numerals. I also would not put on any divisional emblems. You just don't see many Panthers with them. I have seen pictures of Panthers of the 3rd SS Panzer Division with them however. Thats the skull decal on your sheet. But they were not present in Normandy. As for the road wheels the crew put on the camoflage colors and unless you were doing a specific tank it works. I hope I've been some help. And again I must complement you on a job well done.

Orders are orders....
She's going to Normandy...and the crew will fix the wheels.

I'm going to use the red/white numbers and camo the wheels and weather it.

I have a Panzer IV ausf H, would that be in the same place? Same red/white numbers? Same PzAbt?

The Panzer IV was the workhorse of the German army so it would be found on both fronts including the Italian front. In Normandy the standard panzer regiment would have Panthers in the first battalion while the second battalion was comprised entirely of the Panzer IVH & J. As for the colour of numbers, they were never standardized.
Using the red/white style is the safe way to go, but they also appeared in black, white, yellow and blue - sometimes with no outlines and other times as only an outline.

THANKS!!!
jgeratic I can see your pics now. I made some changes, here they are:

And here she is in Normandy. I have a lot of work to do still Evil [}:)]

The dio is in progress with a lot of work to go. Basically a shell has landed near the panther, two trees have cracked in half are bent (away from view in this pic) and bodies are flying. Some MG's are in a test area but like I sait I have a lot of work left to do :)

Muzzleflash... See that German cross you added at the front of the hull side? From here, I can see it's not conforming to the hull details very well, and that you have some 'silvering' happening (air bubbles trapped between paint, usualy flat paint, and decal). Get them off, and use the other two crosses you have on the decal sheet, but FIRST, cut the carrier film of the decal AS CLOSE AS possible from the white of the cross. Then, add the decal onto your model!

I corrected the deceals with some decal-set, dullcoat, and washes. I gave it enough weather to enhance the detail but did not give it an all out mud bath Approve [^]

Thanks for all the comments and help getting me to this point Big Smile [:D]
That decal was VERY silver as DJModels pointed out, I think I got lucky with the repair maneuver because its not shiny any more Tongue [:P]

More stuff coming soon :)
