I don't have any ideas, but have you looked through the kits available at HobbyTerra (Subject: Tanks)?

Which one were you looking at?

Is there anything in particular you're looking for? Or just something that jumps out - something out of the ordinary?

Why don't you try Trumeter latest release: the IS-3... It is said to be a nice kit and I think the IS-3 just look awesome...

If you want something different but do not mind working for it, try a radar station based on the ZIL-157 truck, used post-war including in Viet-Nam...

From the reviews I have read, the new T-55 from Tamiya could possibly be one of their best kits. I have seen pictures, it is the best T-55 from any kit producer. I'm getting one soon.

I have seen the Dragon T34/85 and it is sweet! their t34 hulls fit together well and I've had good luck with them. They also make the NVA verision you reffered to I'd snap it up

I saw an article in a magazine once for a tank that had DUAL tracks. I *think* it was russian? That thing really caught my attention and just about turned me into an armor builder. I have no idea what the tank name/model was.... sorry...
I'll take a look to see if I can find the mag tonight and update you later...

I recently built Fujimi's 1/76 JS-IIM, and it is a gem. Great detail (the tracks are incredible!) and an easy, stress-free build.

This isn't a tank but I built an Italeri kit of a Russian Katyusha Truck which was a fun build and different from previous kits I had done. It's probably a bit hard to find though....

I've got the Tamiya T-55 kit and it's reviews are well deserved. It practically goes together on it's own. The Tamiya T-72 is also an excellent model as is the DML T-34/85, model 1944 and their T-34/85 with modern decals. The Trumpeter JS-3m is a good choice if you want to build an Egyptian tank. DML also has a decent range of APC's (bmp-1, bmp-2, btr-70, btr-80) which build up into good models. They are also being released again by Zvesda.

My idea is for you to get CKIQ (SKIF)'s Grad MB-21. It's a very nice
Russian 6x6 truck equipped with 40 Rocket Launchers. So typical of
Russian armor, and so cool!.
Unfortunately I have only low-res pics of this one to show on my site:
