Freefall,

I agree with Moses on going with the Eduard PE at first.

Also,
If you have a specific King in mind, let me know. I may have a few pics in my reference library that may be of some help.

Cromwell Models do a resin update for the Tiger 2 Henshel kit
its got resin tracks a new drive sprocket and new track hangers for the turret, the late tiger 2s were made with one peice tracks instead of the two peice tracks in the Tamiya kit
you can see the Eduard PE sets on there web site and even see the instuction sheet (always good to see what you get in the kit)

Great advice Bill, I will just add to it somewhat.

For the etched brass, you can not go wrong with either Eduard or Aber. Aber is a bit more complex, but more rewarding. If you haven't used many etched brass frets before, I would recommend Eduard.

For the tracks, I have to go with ModelKasten Workables here. They are plastic, and well molded. It is tedious to construct them, but look fantastic. FruilModel makes awesome Tiger II Tracks but they are more complex then your normal FruilModel Tracks. So I would recommend ModelKasten Workables.

Good Luck

free,

Never be sorry to ask questions. I don't think there's anyone out here that minds reading and adding their comments. I haven't researched the King much, but might be able to give you a little general info. Fruil tracks are metal and you pin them together with a metal wire and superglue. Modelkasten tracks are plastic (I think) not resin. They are supposed to go together pretty well. There are two kinds of modelkasten tracks, one type "works" (in other words are flexible after the glue dries), the others are not. One big advantage to Fruil tracks is that being metal (and flexible), it is a cinch to sag the tracks realisticly. In fact, they do it themselves. I think they are also easier to paint -- the silver is already there!!
Etched kits -- Both Eduard and Aber are pretty good. Aber is usually cheeper for what you get and more highly detailed. Read that as many more parts, much more delicate, and way more complicated. You will need a good reference to add any of them. I find the instructions of both to be leaving a lot to be desired. If you haven't done any PE before, I'd go with Eduard before Aber for the first few. The Aber sets are just plain daunting! (My opinion!)
The different track types are probably due to different productions of the real King. Although there were also special transport tracks that were placed on the tanks to move them by rail flatcar.
There are lots of options out there. It all depends on how much research, money, time and frustration you're willing to do.

Good luck with it and all you do.
