another question for shermanfreak and his friends
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, September 3, 2003 10:19 AM
Guys and girls:
I was working on the italeri 1/72 sherman m4 over the weekend when i hit a little snag. the box art and instructions show the front section of the lower hood with the notch on the topside, but all my reference photos show the notched section on the bottom
and i just couldn't decide which way to do it. were there some shermans with the indent on the topside, or did italeri get it wrong ?
a classic modeling dilemma...
help!

Sorry Frosty ..... I haven't built this kit because I don't work in that scale.

Your description has me a little confused. Is the hood you are referring to the transmission cover ?

P.S. Did you find the pics all right ?

Sorry Frostygirl I had to give ol' Robert a hard time. I'm not sure what you're talking bout on your kit either but Sherm will no doubt follow through and help you out. He is the man when it comes to Shermans. Big Smile [:D]

Robert:
First off, thanx for the pics ! i did manage to check the link to ronusmc's site, and it works. i meant to say thanx yesterday, but i was having problems with my net connection and kept getting bumped ... finally i just gave up. but thanx again, i really appreciate it !
my question is about the notch in the transmission cover, and i'm thinking it should be on the bottom, with a flat surface on the topside. i know it's probably a silly question... sorry.
best wishes,

Ok ... now we're starting to narrow it down a bit.

Is this the early 3 piece transmission housing like the one shown in this pic ?
(by the way .... this may be a Lee, but the cover is the same type)

Or is it more like the one shown in this picture ?

Robert :
thx for the reply...i'm only getting those darn white boxes with the red x instead of the pix. the kit is supposed to be an M4, so i'm thinking it's an early version. i'm still hoping that i put the piece on the right way around, but i came up with a couple of solutions if it's on the wrong way around. first i thought of those ardennes sheets used for winter camo... i'd drape a couple of those over the area and use it in a diorama with an old woman standing in her doorway haranguing the crew for raiding her laundry line. then i looked thru a bunch of FSM back issues to find every pic of a Sherman i could, hoping to see one that had the same look as what i'd built. finally i found a pic of an Easy 8 that had what looked like a couple of plates of extra armor bolted on the front over that area,,, so i took some sheet styrene and made a part like that and added the bolts from thin slices of rod. i haven't added it onto the model yet, but it could be a field mod or retrofit if i do need to hide my botch job. sorry to run on and on and on....
still hoping for more info,

Sometimes I get the red X in the white box, sometimes I get the pic... Weird! Anyway, your solution sounds good. Why not!?

Another one would be to have the front end in hedges, or in water (that's more trouble, though!), or else....

Frosty .... I edited my previous post so that now it is just a link to those pics.

I'm thinking you probably have the early 3 piece like the one shown in the picture of the M3. There was a cut out in the upper corner to accomodate the design of the Lee / Grant. I don't remember seeing this cut out on a Sherman but have seen it on the M12 (but that's another story all together). I'm not sure if the kit you have is made so that you can reverse the tranny cover, if so then I would say that the notch should be under the tank and not visible.

Robert :
that's what i figured. i originally assembled it that way after dry fitting. then i was looking at the instruction sheet and cover art, and said darn it, i've put it on upside down. so i took it off, turned it over, and started cutting and filing it to fit . i guess i should have trusted my instinct a little more... or looked at some reference photos before i started in with the glue. another lesson learned the hard way.Disapprove [V] since i really don't want to take the kit apart again , i'm going to go with the E8 style add-on armor plate up front . at least mine will be unique !
thx for all ur help,
