wittman help
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, September 6, 2003 6:46 AM
first of all i would to know if i am right in thinking that the tiger he commanded at the battle of kursk was 1331. And secondly i have two different references for his tiger with 88 kill rings so3 according to academy and so4 according to Aj press . Did he have them on both or is 1 of the two wrong. And lastly did he command a mid production at any time and if so what number. I am acctualy waiting for a couple of the books but there going to take a long time to get here so i hope until then yo could be kind enough to answer my inquirey. And i,m pretty sure i know who will answer so thankyou

It's hard to find a definitive answer on Michael's Kursk number. I have searched myself, at several sites. Like all Commanders, he had many tanks at his disposal.

In Russia, 1941 Operation Barbarossa, he was in a Stug3 Ausf A named "Buzzard"

As for his other tanks, S04 is the proper number for the 88 kill rings. This is the tank in the pictures with him and his crew (including gunner Bobby Woll)

Wittman commanded several tanks. This includes the famous 222 used at Villers-Bocage. His official tank, when he commanded the 2nd Company, was tank # 205 And his final tank, #007 in which he was killed in action.

This is a start to your enquiry:

Initially Wittman was in charge of a Panzer 3 in a tiger support unit. He started in Tigers about March/April 1943. He first started combat in the tiger during Operation Citadel (5 july 1943) in 13th Kompanie of Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler. He was assigned to the southern salient.

On July 29th of 1943, the 13th Kompanie of Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler was used to form schwere SS Panzer Abteilungen 101, which was then attached to LSSAH. Wittman's tiger with sSSPzAbt 101 was "1331".

The Tiger with the kill rings was actually S04. These markings were painted on the vehicle on 2 February 1944 especially for propaganda photographs taken when Witmman was awarded the Oakleaves to the Iron Cross. There are numerous sites with the propeganda pictures on the net.

I ordered the Hussar decals from Airconnection. They are the 1/16 decals though. The company (Airconnection) is based in Canada, here is the link:

http://www.airconnection.on.ca/Default.htm

They do carry Techmod decals for Tiger 1's too. Go to the "Decals" link and you can get to them from there.

Hope this helped!

bracks, These types of decals are not a stock item that most retailers keep here in Oz.Ordering off the net seems your best option. For an Aussie site try the military workshop at
http://www.bu.aust.com/milwkshop/accessories1.htm
they have a set listed for AUD $20.

I am based in Brisbane and can order stuff through a couple of guys that go to my club. They get stuff from all over the world through their suppliers.

If you try some of your local club guys, they might give you a lead on someone local who may import them for you. Otherwise, I suggest you talk to some of the better local retailers and see what they can do. Usually if you leave a deposit or pay upfront, they a willing to arrange a one off through their suppliers.

good luck

Peter
