My favorite tank. The Aurora kit was my first armor kit I built by myself. I still have the original kit I built back in the early 70s along with its display base. I refurbished it and rebuilt it adding Tamiya M113A1 markings. I wish I had kept it in its original glory, but it was covered with 2" of dust, and had never been painted with peeling decals. The old Aurora armor kits were 1/48 scale.
I have since gone on to buy 3 others, two on Ebay. The first of my "new" ones was when I relented and pulled into an antique store for my wife in Texas. As I was wandering the store, there was an old Model Builders Club box of the M109 Howitzer for $5. I bought it since I had never had that kit and inside was the howitzer and another MBT70! Both were unbuilt and finding that kit spurred me to ask my mom if my old kit was still on my dresser. I told her not to touch it and the next time I was going home I get it (didn't want her vacuuming up any bits).
I have the original Scale Model magazine that has a build up review of the Aurora MBT70 and it gives the kit a thumbs up at the whopping price of $1.50.
I have noticed that there is a smooth original issue MBT70 and a re-tooled one that adds no-slip texture to the upper surfaces as well as suspension arm detail to the hull sides and some coiled cable to the back deck. I have two of each now.
I took some photos of the MBT70 and its successor the XM803 while I was a Ft. Knox last month. I have grandeous plans of merging bits and pieces from the old Tamiya Leopard A4 (35112) and the old Tamiya M1 Abrams (35124) to make a 1/35 scale MBT70. Both tanks evolved from the failed joint venture.
Sorry for the long answer, I just like the vehicle.
