88mm and FAMO 18t???

hey guys,

i was thinking of getting tamiya's 1/35 88mm gun+crew and an accompanying half track Cool [8D]

would i be right in thinking that the 88mm gun was towed by the heavy famo 18tonner? or was it towed by something smaller, and if so can someone sugest the relevant kit please?
finally can someone fix it so that i only have to work 6hrs a day instaed of 12, make double the money,and thus get time to make all the kits which are forming an avalanche risk in my storage cupboard!!! Black Eye [B)]

The Famo could definitely tow the 88mm but I don't know if it was used that much for that purpose. I can't even remember what I've seen the thing towed behind right now so hopefully someone will know. I know, that wasn't much help was it? Big Smile [:D]

I want to say the sdkfz7 was used for it but I just can't remember for sure.

The Famo didn't tow the 88 to my knowledge. That went, I think, to the 21-ton halftracks (if I remember rightly). There was a Famo that had an 88 mounted in the bed, and there is an aftermarket company that produces that conversion for the Tamiya kit. I think Tony Greenland did that conversion in one of the last "Military Modeler in Review" magazine issues (which, by the way is THE armor magazine to subscribe to. It's published quarterly by RZM--I think that's right.)

The 88 was quite commonly towed by the Sd.Kfz.7. Now that doesn't mean that the famo couldn't and didn't, but that would be a lot of tractor for the job.

That is correct Styene. Tony Greenland coverted Tamiya's Famo to mount an 88mm on the back it was awesome. It was also published in his Panzer Modelling Master Class by Osprey..here are pics of his Famo.

so now we've established that it was the sdkfz7 that towed the mighty 88 around town, any idea of who makes the relevant 1/35 kit, and where i can get it (web-based etc as i'm in the UK)??!!
had a look around but could only see the odd hasegawa 1/72...bit small for my 1/35 88 methinks! Tongue [:P]

Tamiya made an sdkfz7 but I don't know how easy it is to get now. You could also look at the AFV sdkfz11, I think it's possible it would have been used some for haulin an 88 around.

I belive both SdKfz -7 and 8 were use to tow 88's. Im sure i had a half-track and 88 in 1/35 20yrs ago!

I think ESCI had a pretty fair 1/35 sdkfz 7 a while back, I don't know what sort of availability it has now. Maybe Ebay or a swap meet.

In answer to a part of your question: The AFV Club halftrack is excellent, with good fit and really nice detail. The reviewer that built up this kit in one of the recent issues of FSM said the tracks were too long. I'll have to reserve judgement on that until I've completed mine. I personally don't think you can go wrong with the AFV kit.

The SdKfz 11 was too little. It was designed for the leFH18 10.5cm Howitzer, the sIG 33 or Pak 40 7.5cm gun. The Flak 18/36/37 would have been too large a load. Anything in a pinch might be possible but just as the FAMO was too much tractor, the SdKFz 11 was too little (remember, the 11 shared the same chassis as the Sdkfz 251 half track)

You shouldn't have any trouble getting decals for the 7. Archer does make quite a few generic sets and that's all you need for the h/t.
