How long is the L7 105 mm gun (in 1/35)
Posted by Zero Enna on Monday, March 19, 2007 12:03 AM

A friend of mine gave me this L7 gun:

As you can see the muzzle is missing, so I must scratchbuild it. I think it's an M60's gun... Well, I'll try to scratchbuild the thermal sleeve too, with very thin plasticard, stretched sprue and lots of patience, and I'll use it for my Samovar project. Anyone has a finished Merkava I/II or M60?... I want to know how much is the barrel lenght, from the tip of the muzzle to the end of the canvas covered part. For my Samovar I'll cut the canvas covered part and replace it for a smooth plastic tube. Thanks a bunch is advance. Most regards.

I've posted this same message in another forum and I got some replies... It was a Spanish forum... So it is not neccesary any reply... Another thing: I can't believe that NOBODY in this Forum has an M60 or a ruler to measure the barrel lenght (something quite simple, methinks)... One more thing... It's not an L7, but an M68, the cannon fitted to an M60... Somebody in other place told me that... maybe some people think that I'm kidding with such questions like that, but believe me, I'm not kidding, I made that question because I'm not an "specialist" on IDF or American subjects, but WWII German and Russian "specialist" instead, and in my country not so much IDF or American kits are available. (more Russian and WWII German kits are available) so I can't take the measures by myself... Well thanks for your attention anyway... Most regards.

First of all I think your message is quite insulting!  We have been more than helpful to you!  So we didn't jump and give you an answer right away!  You ask questions on here but you don't even acknowledge the people who are helping.  Get your answers from others because I'm no longer helping you in anyway!  The IDF doesn't use a Nato round by the way!!! so the configurations are a little different!  It's not a standard M68 cannon.  Sorry your country doesn't have much access to IDF stuff, that's what the internet is for!  Maybe you should acknowledge the people with atleast a thank you, instead of chastising them for making efforts, or for not jumping when you say how high!  Not answering them makes people think you don't really care anyway, as I no longer do for your IDF efforts!  Good luck scratchbuilding a thermal sleeve, you're gonna need it!

Sorry if you found my message insulting... It wasn't my intention... really sorry but I need the info right now because I'm in a hurry, I must finish my commision in a month or so... My university is about to begin and I wouldn't have so much time for modelling, so better begin my project before my classes start. Well I know, I know... Somebody told me that, my cannon is an M68, but I think I'm capable of scratchbuilding the thermal sleeve, as it is obviously less complicated that the Chieftain's or Challenger's... And you're right... There's only three Hobby Ships in Lima, I mean in Perú... Favourite modelling subjects here are: airplanes, trains, Warhammer and tanks, specially WWII German... Importing model kits sometimes can be a pain in the *** due to the local SUNAT's (The customs department) high taxes. A friend of mine (he is an army commander) is a huge IDF maniac and is giving me in commision to make from scratchbuild some weird versions like the M113 HVMS, or the T-55 Samovar... And I think, I'm beginning to like IDF armor... By the way, my friend gave me some books with lots of pictures showing, really close , Merkava I/IIs so in have plenty of info for scratchbuilding the thermal sleeve... I only need patience, time and, I think, a little good luck... Well, sorry again for my previous message... Most regards.

Well perhaps it's a language barrier or something, or the lack of expression that plain text gives.  IDF stuff is very addictive, I got the bite over a year ago, unfortunately it's also very expensive and time consuming.  Not sure if you've tried Ball and Chains at all on a Merk.  Just wait for that one!  Anyway, I'm glad you cleared the air.  Good luck with your build.  I haven't seen a samovar built yet!  Post pics, I'd like to see how you scratch a thermal sleeve!

From the pic, it looks like you've got a kit part from a Tamiya M60A1, which would need a "cap" on the end of the barrel about 5mm in length. The purpose of the additional part was to give a finished look to the end of the two-part kit barrel, and (I think) represent the collar (?) on the gun tube.

If it's a metal AM gun tube, I'd still add a piece of tube on the end of the same (5mm) length.

Edit: OK, I looked again, and it's clearly a two-piece plastic part. So the additional part needed should be right 5mm long, and very slightly larger in diameter than the end of the tube. At least that's what the (missing) kit part looks like.
