Just checked the TV listings for this evening and the Discovery Channel is having a special on the M4 Sherman during the Normandy Invasion. It's on at 9PM out here in California. Should be a good one, set your VCR's/TVO now!

not to worry lads, as usual its a Discovery channel show (or rather series of shows) and will no doubt be played ad infinitum so you'll get your shot.

Even though the Sherman had its advantages, the Tiger won the stack up.
The other segments were, Mig v Sabre
M-16 v AK47, Fokker V Sop, 109 v Spit . Pretty good little pieces.

If you have to have it they offer tapes for sale, go to Discovery.com and you can order them from there.

Well, it wasn't too bad a program.

They had several catagories: Firepower, Armor and agility. The Tiger won on armor & firepower. The Sherm on agility. Overall winner though, in the end, was the Sherman. The sheer numbers it was produced in, was too hard to overcome.

It also looked like the same Tiger1 that was on the History Channel (the Russian hull) with the small drive sprocket and incorrect idler wheel. It was pretty neat seeing the Sherm and Tiger side-by-side though Evil [}:)]

The program also had a demonstration on the rounds fired. They set up metal plates, accourding to each tanks armor thickness, then tried penetrating each with the proper rounds. God Bless those men, who were crews of the Shermans, they were truly heros!

The Firefly version was mentioned and how they tried to install the larger 75 pounder gun in the Sherman turret. Finally get it to fit by turning over the gun. They also said it was never mass-produced because the Americans didn't want a foreign gun in their tank. (I never knew that)

All-in-all, the program was ok but, was only a half hour long. I wish it would have gone through all the variations of both tanks. Maybe in another show!

I caught that last night. I though it was pretty good, but of course just as its about to start the phone rings.

I'm assuming that the Tiger wasn't real by what Erock68 said.
The question is.... Is there a real running Tiger tank out there somewhere?

Trevor, That's a good question. Especially in light of the fact that Tamiya recorded the engine from the only running (their words) Tiger II for the CD they made of the Tiger I. Said the engines were very similar.
That makes it sound like there is no running "real" Tiger I to me. But I'd like to know for sure.
Thanks for posting the notice of the show. I enjoyed it. Especially the WWII footage. They showed some Tigers hitting (read totally destroying) some Shermans. It came on at 10PM here, so I got lucky (made the kids all go to bed!!)

Take care;

Tiger 131 at the Bovington Tank Museum is a tiger 1 and was running for a while, minus the turret (see www.tiger-tank.com) . They are now rebuilding a new engine for it.

http://www.tiger-tank.com/secure/journal28.htm for pics of what happened to the engine.

Neither the blown engine or the new one is the right HL210P45 engine, so the question of "Is there a complete running Tiger 1?" is still unanswered.

Happy Modelling

For those of you who missed it, or couldn't get it at all, check out the Discovery channel online. They offered the whole series "Great Military Clashes" for sale. I saw all of the segments and found them very informative. I also thought it was interesting how the Sherman's turret could turn faster due to the fact that its diameter was smaller than the Tiger's.
