Superdetailing the Tamiya 1/16th scale Tiger II
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 10:00 AM
I bought the newish release of the 1/16th scale Tamiya motorized (not RC) Serien-turm Tiger II about a year ago, and haven't gotten around to building it. It came in a black satchel, and a ha-UGE box. I was impressed.

What is out there and recommended to superdetail this beast? PE, brass barrels, decal sets, etc. More specifically, how many o there are necessary corrections of real inaccuracies?

I'd ideally like to build it for the Tiger II's of sPzAbt 509 and their actions in Hungary in January 1945, possibly Jah's tank. Anyone making battalion decals, etc? I have the first volume of Tigers in Combat. I don't believe that the battalion's Tiger II's wore zimmerit.

Also, any building hints?

Larry, look here
http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6246

Myself and J-Hulk both hve the static kit, there is the Aber p/e special edition set for around $200 or you can get pieces of it seperately (www.airconnection.com) Aluminum barrels, metal replacement tracks etc. Read through the topic and see what you like and join up if you're going to start building soon. Myself and Hulk will both be starting before too long, Erock's smokin along on his Full option kit. Big Smile [:D]

Eric, I think Larry's talking Tiger II here, not Tiger I!Wink [;)]
Well, still a Tiger, I reckon!
Not gonna be able to use much if any of the Aber set, though.
There is some useful info for all big Tigers on our 1/16 Tiger I build forum, though. Check it out!

Hey Larry, I have the static Tiger II as well, and it came with a very sweet aluminum barrel. Don't see any need to replace that!

My bad Larry, I'll start reading one of these days. They do make metal tracks for the Tiger II also. I have not seen any p/e parts for them though I wonder if Tamiya might have screens at least?? Hulk, you have any info on that?

Actually, it's been so long since I opened the box that I don't even know for sure that they're not provided with the kit. Hmmm. I do know what the treads are prebuilt individual link plastic, though. Are the metal treads markedly superior?

I also noticed that brassbarrels.com has not one but two 1/16th scale barrels for the big Tiger II -- wonder why, if the kit barrel is fine?

I guess I'll fish around and see if anyone's done a PE set for the Tiger II.

Thanks for the responses!

Howdy, fellas!

Eric, I knew you'd figger it all out! Wink [;)]

There is no Tamiya PE screen set available for the Tiger II, but they do make a set for the Tiger I. 800 yen here in Japan.

I haven't seen those brass barrels, but there were two types used on Tiger IIs: a one-piece deal and a two-piece deal. The older Tamiya kits did not come with the nice aluminum barrel the new release has, so those barrels must be aimed at those kits. Also, the Porsche KT comes with the 2-piece barrel, while most of the actual vehicles were fitted with the 1-piece barrel.

I think the aluminum barrel included with the new kit is great. The muzzlebrake is still a two-piece plastic affair, but I reckon it's fine, too.

Tamiya also included a PE Zimmerit set with the newest RC KT. I don't like the looks of it, but they may release it separately in the future.
