T-62a colors
Posted by lizardqing on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 5:00 PM
I am starting on my new project of a Tamiya T-62A , probally the kit that I have seen not to many good things about here. Just wondering what the main color should be whether regular OD or some version of it. The instructions say dark green. I thought about making it an Iraqi version but no decals for it and my arabic just is not what it used to be. Thanks and any other tips about this kit are welcome to.

I've got one of those, too, but haven't started it yet. I'm probab;e going to do mine in a standard OD Green, just because it's easier, and easier to weather. The kit doesn't look too bad, but I'm just using it as a "filler" kit between heavy builds.

That's basically what I had in mind also.I was wondering though why this kit has most of the accsesories molded to the body , all the ones I have done so far have been seperate and look much better. Is it because it was produced a while back or is it just a cheaper kit?

This list is by no means complete, but this is the information that I have found:

Russian: russian green, T-62's in Afghanistan were sometimes painted with sand-gray splotches over russian green
Iraq: green splotches/stripes over desert sand
Syria: desert sand splotches/stripes over russian green
Egypt: desert sand
Special Ops vol. 19 shows T-62's painted in rather creative ways by the Northern Alliance and Taliban. There are probably more camo schemes available on the
'net or in books, but this is all I could dig up at the moment. Hope this helps. I will be working on a T-62m with BDD armor in the sand-gray over green pattern in Afghanistan. I've bought a correct turret, fruil dshka, eduard p/e and fruil tracks. This will be my winter project to keep me out of the cold...haha

Hi guys
TheTamiya T-62A is an older kit first released in the bad old days of the cold war, Its not a bad kit, but there are better ones out there. If you check some of the back issues of FSM you should be able to find some articles on them. Good luck.

I believe the Tamiya T-62 is the only one available in 1/35 scale. I agree that the kit suffers from age. I've bought a Barrel Depot aluminum barrel, ModelKasten tracks, Eduard PE and the Verlinden update, but it is much like throwing good money after bad. Also got a set of MR starfish road wheels.

Thanks Kaleu, now just to pick a pattern out of all those.
Sounds like a kit not to expect much out of building OOB as I will be. Thant's ok though, did'nt cost me anything and gives me something to do between ones I really want to do.

Well if you change your mind and want a better turret and assy. Verlinden has a great kit which features a turret, barrel and more.

Yea as nice as that would be , right now I am lucky to get the kit. All my builds have been budget ones thanks to a dui driver that made me miss 3 months of work recently.

Iraqi tanks are easy to paint.

Follow these steps:

Get a rattle can of flat-black spray paint and paint the entire model. Then paint it rusty colors in places, crush it with your foot, and place an abrams on top of it :)

Dont forget the white flags for the figures :)

Or just pick a desert yellow type of color and have fun :)

Lizard,

The T62's that I saw in Afganistan were alomst all a very black, burnt color... I guess they don't respond well to 30mm DU rounds from A-10's :) The two or three that I saw that were still movable were colored in a faded blackish green color At one time it looked like it was a very dark OD.... If you are planing a dio or vehicle out of the Afganistan area then go really heavy on the fading of the paint and rust... They don't do a whole lot to keep the vehicles looking or running very good...

Two replies here.. 1st.. I remember when the T62A kit and the tank itself were state of the art! (ouch, I'm gettin' old!). And, were a shade darker than olive drab, with BIG white numbers on the turrets!

2nd. A former student of mine (now a Marine Sergeant) has a photo of himself perched upon the TC's hatch of a T-62 in Iraq.... Outhouses were scarce in the field if you get my drift.

I need a copy of that photo!!

Anybody interested in doing a dio?

To get the dark od what color should be added to od paint? would it be a darker green or a little black?

Ron- That is funnier than the pic I've seen of a soldier taking a leak on a poster of saddam's face.
