Help Winter Camo
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, October 11, 2003 4:44 AM
Gday fella's

I wanna do a winter camo scheme on my tiger, i have heard of you guys talking about pastels and brush it on. Well i went into a arts an craft store to just to buy a white but they had a few there what white do i buy? What sort of white pastel do u use or do you just get normal white chalk the stuff they use at school.
Do i just thin down some paint and spray or is a brush better?
Thanks in advance

Ive never used pastels for my winter scheme. I always airbrush on a coat of acrylic white over the original paint scheme (seal the paint scheme before applying the white). Once its applied I wait until I can handle the model. Maybe 20 minutes acrylics dry fast. Then , using a stiff brush of different sizes I take acrylic thinner and scrub away any areas that might see serious wear, i.e around edges , engine deck, turret top, around hatches etc....Its worked great for me. I usually use Tamiya white thinned to your liking.

Dirk-

Somewhere I've seen, online, someone's Tiger with a great looking winter camo job done similar to monsterarmor's. They sprayed a light colored brown all over tank. Then they applied a white coat over that. Then took q-tip, brush and dipped in thinner and ran it all over hull, particularly on edges. The thinner removed the white to show the underneath color. Like brown showing through the fading white. Another technique. I remember the final appearance was very well done. Hope this helps.

I put a winter wash on a T-34. After the model was built and painted I covered it with a clear coat. Then I sprayed flat white over the model covering up the camo paint underneath. I painted lighter/heavier in different areas and when it dried you can just barely see the camo below showing through. In the lighter sprayed areas the camo can be seen as if the wash had worn off with time.

good luck,

I am currently doing an M4 in winter scheme. While others use airbrush, I deceided to use a small brush in applying a flat white acrylic paint on the model in standard Olive Drab color. I figured that most of the winter camo were applied on the field by crews. Sometimes with just paint brushes. The uneven paint with brush strokes looked good to me.

But choose the application method that will work for your taste.

Good luck.
