Do you mean the long rectangular red (magenta sort of), yellow and blue reflective panels that were placed over allied vehicles? If so, they were used by the allies some time after D-Day. Apparently the white stars and lack of markings on British tanks confused the poor flyboys and they needed something bigger to look atTongue [:P].

The panels were made of a fluoresent material or plastic film and were used either singulalrly or in combination depending on the order dictated to all units for the period of operation - supposedly daily but logistically they used the same panel/s for about a month .

From memory, the panels were of two main types:
One that could be rolled up and stowed in a canvas scabbard attached to the end of the panel -sort of like a banner or set of tent poles, etc are held today.

The other had ties attached so that these could be used to tie around the panel after it was rolled up.

Some panels were longer than others, but I don't recall which.

The blue panel was used rarely because it was more difficult to see from the air.
