I'm back with some pictures...
Posted by Dwight Ta-ala on Monday, October 20, 2003 10:44 PM
Hi guys,

Finally, I am back in the civilized part of the country. As I have mentioned previously, here are some pictures of the guns displayed in front of the air base I visited.

This is a 105mm Howitzer.

I don't know what this is but probably a sort of bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun.

Hope these will be of use...Wink [;)]

I was on a site inspection trip for a proposed expressway project to connect two former US bases somewhere north. These bases are now industrial zones with international airports. The Phil. Air Force is occupying one of the bases. It is where I got the pics. There are some aircrafts displayed also but these were in bad condition already. I'll post pics of them next time.

Nice to have you back Dwight. Neat pics. That second gun looks more like 20mm to me. Can't say I've seen anything like them. Thanks for sharing.

Sorry Tigerman, I never tried to measure the diameter of the barrel. There's also no name or identification plate around it.

The bottom gun looks like a chinese copy of the German 2cm flack gun design. Maybe someone that knows for sure will confirm it :)

Great pics Dwight. I'm not sure what the second gun is but I don't think it's a Bofors. It certainly does have a German look to it.

Thanks for sharing.

Chinese? or German? That's strange. I mean we never have any military hardware from China or Germany. Mostly we get these stuff from the US.

Well, anyway you could be right, too.

Yes, DJ. Got some pics but not so good. There was a UH-1 helo, an Crusader, an F-5A, a pedestal mounted F-80 and I think a T-37? I'll post the pics if you like but I did not get close-up pics.

Let me guess, you photochopped your Italeri 1/35 105mm howitzer into the weeds, didn't you? Nice pics, Dwight!

Welcome back Dwight! That second gun is a double barreled what's-it that incorporates the doovermahiggie loading system.... got me what it is too. Remember, if they relocate these to the junk yard to make room for construction, you get them moved into your back yard!

Dwight, those pics of the 105 are great. I've got an Italieri M-7 Priest that I'm picking away at, and they'll help a great deal. I'm not going full bore on it, because I want it to be perfect, and my skills aren't there yet. Work does progress though, and I really appreciate the pics. Did you enjoy your trip?

That second gun looks like a Russian 23mm anti-aircraft gun or a Chinese licence-built version.
Our old friend, Mr. Charlie had lots of them.

Yes, J-hulk and a free tan and insect bites, too.

Ron, how I wish I can take these stuff home but these are not affected by the proposed expressway.

DJ, I'll e-mail it to you but it's not very good. I only have one full-body shot and not close-ups. Most of the outside parts of the planes have been already stripped as well as the engines.

Thanks to everyone.

Ha-ha-ha. Boy, is it hard to get away with something like this nowadays. LOL.

QUOTE: Did you enjoy your trip?

Sure did madda. Actually the base was the second choice for the landing of Pres. Bush's Air Force One for the Oct 18 visit. A lot of secret service guys were in the hotel with us. Unfortunately, Air Force One landed in Manila.

It could be, Ray. Actually I just noticed the star on the left box. This is basically a Russian or Chinese insignia. The Philippine Army or Air Force do not use this sign. I am just wandering how we got one of these. I checked it out and we do have bofors AA guns but it's the navy who uses them. The air force uses the 20mm U.S. made AA guns.

The star was why I guessed chinese copy for it. That star looks like a norinco stamp on all the chinese copies that I have seen. Just my guess.... would be nice to find out :)

I believe the AA guns are of the same type as used at Udorn RTAFB in the 60's or 70's, possibly eastern block manufacture(note star stamped in ammo boxQuestion [?] lid).

Alex: I got these from Clark AFB. These were relocated from Villamor AFB in Manila.

Chris: Most of the 105's here get a lot of action in fighting with the rebels down south and the military is good in keeping them in shape. Besides, these 105's are very old and withouth proper maintenance they would be worthless.

Derek: That AA gun is really puzzling me, maybe you are correct.

Thanks guys.

I've heard the rank goes from snap together to 'god' (no not 'the' God, just 'a' god... I think 'Sherm' is close to the latter by now. He'll make it instantly if he invites us all to the buffet he's hosting. (at least I heard he was hosting one!)
