Mirage "Luchs" *WIP* *build finished*
Posted by biffa on Sunday, January 6, 2008 8:18 PM

Hi guys, here is my next project i know this kit is over shadowed by the Tasca one but it still looks to me like it will build up into a decent looking "Luchs" im not sure what i will add yet i am just going to play it by ear but for those of you like me who figure $60 for the tasca kit is a tad high when these can be picked up for around $15 on ebay then this might be of some interest. (i dont doubt for a second that the Tasca kit isnt worth that its just that im just a bit of a scrooge about these things Smile [:)])

Brief History

A prototype designated VK1303 was completed in April 1942 intended for battlefield reconnaissance but weighing in at 12,900kg proved to be too heavy for the russian roadless territories, an improved version that weighed 11,800kg was accepted and put into production as the PzKpfw II Ausf. L "Luchs" (linx) SdKfz 123 light tank. The tank was armed with a 20mm KwK38 L/55 cannon and a 7.92mm MG34 machine gun. In total approximatly 132 of these tanks were built and introduced into service by mid 1943, they served with the 3rd, 4th and 5th SS "wiking" panzer divisions on the eastern front and 116th panzer division on the western front.

The kit contains

4 large sprues with 93 parts

7 sprues of individual link tracks

2 small PE frets

1 length of string for cables

1 Decal sheet

X2 (below)

X7

My first impessions are the molding looks nice and crisp with little or no flash evident, the few sink marks and knockout marks present all appear to be in places where they will be hidden and the detail looks quite good, the PE looks good but the string provided for the cable looks like it may be a bit overscale. The decals look crisp and in register with very a thin carrier film but do not seems to correspond with the marking directions, the version i was planning to do "tank no.17 4th Panzer division eastern fron 1943/44" is not provided on the decal sheet.

The build begins with the assembly of the tub which consists of a bottom, two sides and the front and rear plates the parts are nice and square and line up perfectly forming the tub no filler was required for this.

A lot of reading for one simple step lol tune in next week i may have a road wheel ready Laugh [(-D]

Looks like the "tank factory" is back in gear!!! Cool subject of a very rare tank...there are few pics of these in the field...one that does come to mind is the CO of the 4th PD in the turret of one...will be watching with anticipation, Ron!

Mirage?  Don't think I've ever heard of them, I'm eager to see how it turns out!  So is this your 1st "official" build of 2008 Ron?  Didn't you start the KV-2 last month?  I guess you don't shut down the tank factory during the holidays!!

Nice to have the "Review Style" lead-in. It helps to know things about the kit even though you've never seen or maybe heard of it. I also heard that the ICM one is much cheaper than the Tasca and is a beauty of a build. None-the-less, it should be interesting to see how this guy builds up.

I dont mean to insult your intelligent, but your tank looks like a tank out of hell. I dont know weather you want to show us that the Mirage Luchs has a bad fit or what Confused [%-)]

But there are lots of improvements that can be done starting from closing that front gap.

Some years ago I built the ICM Luchs and aside from having to wash off all the cosmoline on the parts, I recall it went together right well.

Got crushed in a move (don't they always) so I'm starting on another one this week(ish)

Let's rattle the cage, crack the machine. Let 'em know who you are, shine to be seen.

Howdy dudes, i have a pretty good sized update, so far the kit has gone as expected for the most part the fit was good and i knew from the start i would be replacing all the tools and a lot of small details using the spares box and some scratch building so no big suprises except maybe i ended up replacing slightly more of the detail than expected but mostly for the fun of it and this is a good learning kit for this kind of thing, and i didnt want to spend any money on AMs just to keep the project cheap (if i wanted to spend a lot then it would be wiser to just buy the Tasca kit) anyway onwards,,,

following the tub assembly i attached the suspension arms and surrounding details

while the suspension arms were setting over night i worked on the turret, i replaced the barrel with a spare plastic one from the dragon flak kit akso i drilled out the MG hole and added an MG from the spares box, also the molded on weld seams were sanded of and replaced.

next the fenders needed the fronts chopping off then i sanded the undersides to scale them down some

the upper hull followed taking care to keep everything square then the upper and lower hulls were attached there was a sizable gap where the two front plates met so i shimmed it with plastic sheet.

back to the running gear the only problems here were the idler wheels, the mold wasnt lined up correctly so the front half was way off with the rear and need some fixing but it cleaned up ok and the rest was fine

back to the turret there were no vision blocks provided so i added some then the hatches were fitted also the vision slit on the turret side was replaced

next i added the spare track holder on the front most of this was done from scratch also the lights were replaced with spares, i also began adding the other upper hull details

i began on the rear deck with the grills which were missing the straps so they were added then the cable brackets, also the center part of the long rear grill was removed and redone the original was just straight bars across, the exhaust was reworked also

most of the detail on the rear plate was removed and redone from scratch and a spare jack and brackets were added

next i added hinges to the tool box's from the spares box (spares box has taken a serious hit on this one heh)

and that about sums it up for now, still a ways to go but i must say i really am having a good time with this.

Ron, those grills really make a huge impact, as does your other fixings. My guess is you'd be pretty bored building a Tamiya kit.

How's the foot doing btw? It was your foot that was hurt wasn't it?

howdy RonSmile [:)]--gad dang buddy, I don't even know what to say anymore!-- many of your builds have seemed to me kind of mostly OOB(as you have stated during them)with some nice P.E  and  some cool add ons and what not,-- not a critique mind you, 'cause I love your work,(Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup]) but when I look at those scratched grills on this build, well, I just am at a loss --the speed an excellence of your work is mind boggleing to me---my eyes hurt just thinking how long I would have to wear my magnifiers to do that work-----great, great stuff man--treadCool [8D]

Brilliant, as usual...nice looking running gear w/ that kit! So often we get hung up on painting and weathering that we don't appreciate a good build, especially if the kit is a "difficult" one...very nicely done...

Thanks fella's i appreciate the interest,

Hi Eric actually the new tamiya kits are fine (except the rubber band tracks) i did the char and the hetzer and they were wonderful straight OOB its just some of the older ones i like to dress up sometimes, i blame Steve Crockett he once pointed out to me that i should look into some PE tool clamps because kit ones were letting me down, up until then painting and weathering were my best tools but since then i have tried to upgrade certain items, sometimes on kits like these i like to see how far i can go (without spending money of course) with scratch building etc,,.

Although i am able to walk fine etc, but the ankle didnt heal well and i still have a strange egg shaped lump and it feels weak but hopefully time will take care of it thanks for asking Smile [:)]

Hey Treadster man  it all depends on my mood sometimes i like to build straight OOB sometimes i feel fruity and want to try new things i just do what feels fun at the time heh

Stevo my man you really did help me out with 2007 i had totally lost all count of what i did i will keep a tab this year but incase i forget,,,, Whistling [:-^]

Ernest yes this was the first official build started this year the KV was begun in december also i have a bedford QL with 6 pounder built and ready for paint which i began in december also but i will call them 2008 builds Smile [:)]

Thanks again everyone i have an update,,

still working on the details i scrounged up some tools and used some voyager clamps i had, also an old jack block bracket and piece of wood worked for it, the jerry cans were spares from a dragon 234 build and the racks were made from PE frets, for the long tool box i used a piece of streched sprue to make an hinge and some old eduard clasps finished it off, the notek light was left over from the trumpeter e10 build.

still a couple of things to do but the list is getting shorter i just hope the spares box can stand it heh.

Looking good Ron! Check the jack block PE as it looks like one of the pieces has separated from the underside near the top? Unless you've left it that way on purpose for painting?

You're going to have to call this one a FrankenLuchs by the time you're done with it! Laugh [(-D]

Looks good as usual Ron.

I did this kit a couple years ago and found it lacking compared to today's kits.

I'm sure your effort will pay off!!

Coming along nicely. The PE really adds quite a bit of finesse to the kit.

Thanks for the comments guys,

Bill, Frankenluchs is indeed the perfect name i really do enjoy these types of builds the best heh, i did leave the jack bracket free to remove the block i want to see what it looks like left natural wood good eye though Smile [:)]

Hi Andy i agree the kit is lacking and need some detail adding hopefully it will pay off in the end.

Hi Zoran as always i appreciate the comments.

Last update on the build,,

proceeding with the details some latches were fashioned for the toolboxes and some tow hooks added

A grab gandle for the turret roof was made from wire

and finally an overshot of the rear

and front

with the tank finished all that remained was the tracks, the kit tracks are not quite correct and the connector pin should be sunken in the end of each link so once i had the tracks on i drilled the end of each link slighlty so simulate this it is not perfect but once painted and weathered should look ok.

that just about wraps up the build part which was interesting and fun next up the painting and weathering which i probably wont start until next week.
