Need help to identify StuG IV unit...
Posted by Stampede on Thursday, January 24, 2008 2:12 AM

I need some help in identifying this Stug IV, to get the correct unit number and unit insignia.
I've decided to go with this late ambush scheme on my IV....I think Wink [;)]

I have a feeling that it is from the 17th SS Panzergrenadierdivision Götz von Berlichingen but I'm definately not sure. Confused [%-)]

Any help is appreciated!

Here's the pic...

Well, the scheme suggest the StuG was produced in late '44, perhaps Sept, Oct...there are no unit markings on the vehicle...the 17th SS panzergrenadier did have a battalion of these at Normandy but all my refs show burnt out examples so I am not sure of their scheme or markings...I don't think this unit fought in the East so the plate (if that is true) is not a 17th SS vehicle, as it remarks that it represents a StuG on the Eastern front...

A color plate of this vehicle and a photo can also be found in Osprey's Sturmgeschutz III & IV. Additional photos can be found in Spielberger's Sturmgeschutz III and it's Variants. All of these are factory photos taken before this vehicle was issued, in late August / early September 1944.

Quoting page 46 of Osprey's book; "This Sturmgeschutz IV is ready for delivery at Krupp-Grusonwerk in Magdeburg. Most Sturmgeschutz IV were issued to single companies in Panzer-Jager-Abteilung, in the Volks-Grenadier-, Jager-, Gebirgs- and Infanterie-Divisionen."

I know of no other photos of this vehicle in action with it's assigned unit.

Very rarely were StuGs issued to Panzer or Panzergrenadier Divisions proper...as Kykeon states, most StuG IV's (and Many StuG III's) were issued to the tank destroyer companies of infantry units.  Many StuG III's were formed into independant Battalions and Brigades, but I know of no StuG IV's that were issued to independant units...and although 1,600 (I believe) were built (about the same amount as the Tiger I and II combined) they are rare in pics...
