10-26-03 Sherman work in progress
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 23, 2003 10:51 AM
Well, I am getting close to completing my 1st Sherman. This is Tamiya's M4A3 75mm. I still have more weathering to do and once the tracks and accessories (backpacks, gas cans, etc) are installed, will dirty it up a bit more.

I know the wooden tool handles look new (I just finished the base coat and will add darker streaks for wood grain) I will also apply the pastels to them when the kit is complete.

Great Job - Erock.

Nice, slightly used Sherman. Nice dirt, dust and rust.

Does this mean you have turned to the "light side" of the "Dark Side".

Awesome Job !

Coming along nicely, Eric. Maybe if you get the weathering just right, it will look like a Tiger!

That's looking really good Eric! Can't wait to see that one finished.

So this is why you've not posted any more progress on the Tiger??? Wink [;)] Big Smile [:D]

Looks great, Eric. I didn't know the Tamiya Shermie was that nice of a kit. I should have known better. Looking forward to seeing more of it!

I'm impressed! Nice work Eric. I especially like the weathering job. What did you use and how did you do it?

QUOTE: So this is why you've not posted any more progress on the Tiger???

Eric,

That's the reason. I really wanted to take 2 Armor pieces to the Cleveland Model Show on November 1st (which is next weekend) so, I had to get going on them. Each is at a different stage of completion. Work threw me the biggest curve-ball with all the overtime coming my way. I so want to get going on my Tiger but, I gotta keep focused Wink [;)]

As for the weathering, it's very basic right now. I painted the entire kit in Tamiya XF-62 O.D. then I did the oil wash with Burnt Umber, lightened a bit with White. I then RE-washed with just the basic Burnt Umber on the lower hull (front, back and sides) I dry-brushed Steel, Gun Metal and Rust on the rest.

I almost had a stroke this morning when I found out that the cat had played with (and eventually lost) one of the suspension pieces during the night Black Eye [B)] Shermanfreak came through in a pinch and is sending me the needed parts.

Turning away from my beloved German armor? No! I do however really like the way this Shermie is progressing.

Be careful Eric ...... you're slowly being lured to the O.D. side of the dark side .... the darkest of all.

As already mentioned, your Shermie is coming along nicely. Very clean build so far. I really look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thanks for sharing.

Not to worry! I've found that a Sherman suspension can actually be quite easily whittled from a cat's skull. Tongue [:P]

Oh, kitty! Fear not. The bad man was just kidding.

I really like the way this one is coming out. Makes you want to hop on and lob some HE at the Heinies. Good show!

(I just read that many of the Shermie crewmen actually preferred the 75 to the 76! Weird, huh? Apparently the 75 was vastly superior in HE work to the 76, and since 75% of the ammo a Sherman fired was HE, well, there you have it.)

That's one good looking sherman, Eric. Good job. Man, with all this good sherman jobs posted lately, I am having second thoughts posting pics of my winter M4A3 105 that I just completed. I really messed that one up. Maybe I should go get another M4 kit.

Sherm,

Nothing, I swear. It just came out...well I don't know. Anyway maybe I should post pics of it here next week after I get through with the figures.

I just think that it won't stand a chance against the other really good M4 builds posted here recently.

Well, good luck to me.

Very nice work indeed Eric. I'm tempted to go and buy another one of these to replace my ancient effort, that currently hides out in the garage storage.

By the way, did you know that a properly cured cat pelt or bleached skull looks fantastic as a dio base for German Tigers, Panthers, etc?

Sorry guys and girls, I'm not a cat person!Dead [xx(]

One of my kids filled my VCR with Jello, or something. I don't remember exactly what, now. But that was a few years ago and vcr's weren't $49 to replace then!

My oldest son, when he was about 2, poured a glass of koolaid into the keyboard of my Apple II. (That was a popular computer in the days before Bill gates owned the world and the pc was the standard!)

My second oldest son, when he was about 8 or 9, decided, for some reason unknown to me to this day, to run a nice little bead of Elmer's Glue between each row of keys on my pc. (At least by then I was using a pc with a detached keyboard, and it was easy and cheap to replace!)

At least I have not yet had mine do me as bad as a buddies kid did to him. His was 4 years old and thought he would help out dad and fill the car up with gas, only thing was though is he used a garden hose that had water running. I think he got caught after at least half a tank. At least I thought it was pretty funny (pre-kid days) until I had to help drop the tank.

6 days left until the show and here is my progress:

I added storage crates to the back and most of the suspension is complete. I also scratch-built the Hedgerow Cutter (Cullins device) and added it to the front (Thanks for the link Sherm)

I am now working on the roping that will tie down gas cans , crates and supplies to the back.
